Something Made Last Night’s Win Extra … Impressive? I’m Not Sure That’s the Right Word, But a Thing Happened ...Middle East

Usually I don’t have the headline drive the entire boat for a post. I have a general idea of what the headline is going to be, then I write the post, and then I confirm what I want the headline to be. In this case, I decided to write the headline first, but I tripped myself up halfway through. I decided to leave it because, in a way, that hang-up kinda underscores this whole post.

Anyway, as we were watching the Cubs beat the Phillies last night – or, more accurately, before they were clearly beating them – a storyline was emerging. It’s a familiar tale in many losses: the Cubs were missing out on so many opportunities. Sometimes it was their own mistake, sometimes it was a great Phillies play. But there were runs left on the board, and if the Cubs had gone on to lose, that would’ve been the story.

The Cubs won the game, however, so that element almost gets forgotten. Nature of the beast.

But when I saw this incredible factoid from Meghan Montemurro, I knew I had to share, even if I didn’t exactly know how I felt about it:

The Cubs stranded a season-high 17 runners on base tonight against the Phillies, marking their first win when leaving at least 17 on base since June 2, 2018 and their first win at Wrigley Field since July 3, 2010 (both also had 17 LOB).

The Cubs left SEVENTEEN runners on base last night! But still won! That’s really … I mean, is it impressive? It’s good to win, and they did score seven runs. And it’s good to give yourself that many opportunities. But it isn’t objectively good to fail to score so many times, you know? So what exactly do you call that? Can I even call it a “fun” fact?

I guess it’s just interesting. It is to me, anyway. And there is something mildly encouraging about pulling out a win in a game for which a loss would otherwise be so easy to explain (and be angry about). Heck, implicit in the stat is that you rarely accumulate wins when you leave 17 runners on base. In a home non-walk-off win, that’s an average of MORE THAN TWO RUNNERS LEFT ON PER INNING. It’s definitely interesting to have that many scoring opportunities not cashed in and still win.
