News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is recovering after suffering a stroke in recent days, his family says.

Daley, who served six terms as Chicago mayor from 1989 to 2011, has dealt with assorted neurological issues in the past, but his family says he is doing speech therapy and expected to be okay after suffering a minor stroke.

After a stay in the hospital, Daley is now home, his family said.

The former mayor was previously hospitalized in 2022 for a “neurological illness,” with doctors performing a battery of tests before he was transferred to a rehab facility.

Daley had also suffered “stroke-like” symptoms in 2014, but the family declined to confirm at the time if he had suffered a stroke.

Born in 1942, Daley served as an Illinois State Senator and Cook County State’s Attorney before winning a mayoral election in 1989.

He would ultimately serve six terms in office before being replaced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2011.
