POLAND — The Poland girls lacrosse team got the offense going a couple games back. And it was no different on Monday when Boardman made the drive down U.S. Route 224.

Poland scored a season high in goals at Dave Pavlansky Field, and won 17-5 against the Spartans for its third straight win.

The Bulldogs (4-4) scored five goals in the first quarter, including three in the final minutes for the first.

“We wanted to start fast. That’s kinda what we talked about pre-game is just bringing it to them, bringing it to the opponent,” Poland head coach Zac Capan said. “We finally had everybody there. We’ve had bits and pieces where we were missing a play for a good reason, but it was good to have everybody there and firing on all cylinders.”

The Spartans (3-6) got on the board when Lydia Kenney fired a shot low into the bottom-left corner with 8:39 left in the first half. But the Bulldogs responded with an Aurelia Cook goal 30 seconds later.

Cook found the back of the net again with 6:19 on the clock after she got a free shot following a Boardman penalty.

Boardman’s Olivia Cuevas got that goal back 28 seconds later, however, and the Spartans trailed 7-2. Then another Spartan push near the net allowed Sofia Elia to take a free shot, and she capitalized.

Cook took advantage of another Boardman penalty with a goal, and Poland led 9-2 with 2:09 remaining before the break. Kenney added her second goal after she wrapped around the left side of the net and scored to the high-right corner.

And after the high-scoring second quarter, the Bulldogs took a 9-3 lead into halftime.

Poland’s attack continued to start the third. Elia attacked the net and scored seconds into the third, and Julia Snyder followed it up with her first score immediately after.

Emma Puhl added Poland’s third goal of the third quarter, and the Bulldogs had three tallies in the first 1:41 of the period. Gigi Zenobi scored after gathering a loose ball in front of the net to give the Bulldogs a 13-3 lead, and it also started the running clock.

Kenney got her hat trick after scoring with one minute left in the third, and the Bulldogs took a 14-4 advantage on the scoreboard into the fourth.

“Transitions were bad, we had too many dropped balls,” Boardman head coach Matt Pavone said. “Hats off to Poland. They played really aggressive on offense, and they kept the ball on our defensive side too much.”

The Spartans, who were coming off back-to-back wins over Laurel and Green, couldn’t get past freshman goalie Autumn Koby on Monday.

“We have a freshman goalie who got thrown into the fire, who probably didn’t expect to play. But she did and did a great job,” Capan said.

The last time the Bulldogs scored 15 goals in a game came in a 16-15 double-overtime loss to GlenOak on April 17, 2023. Monday’s win was the first time they reached double-digit goals this season.

However, the win followed a trend. The Bulldogs have outscored its opponents 32-18 during their three-game winning streaking.

“As a coach, that’s what you want to do. You want to continue to get better as the season goes on, and hopefully, we haven’t played our best yet,” Capan said.
