CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — People spoke out against ICE at the Ontario County Board of Supervisors meeting.
Some are calling on the board to create and pass a resolution stating the county will not cooperate with ICE. One speaker addressed the board about the use of tax dollars.
“I believe it’s imperative that action be taken by this board, so the county, this board and the Public Safety Committee— our tax dollars should not be used to racially profile individuals based on race or ethnicity, or perceived race or ethnicity,” said Phillip Flemming.
Another person questioned how many times residents need to make their position clear.
“You expect people to come here to tell you something that should be obvious by now: We do not want you to cooperate with ICE,” said Nancy Twisle. “How many more times are you going to ask the people to show up here?”
Also at the meeting, the board asked for public input on whether the county should opt out of the state’s new short-term rental registry to track Airbnb, VRBO and similar rentals. There were no comments on the issue.
