Home Town stars Ben and Erin Napier are one of the most beloved couples on HGTV.
The pair, who wed in 2008 after four years of dating, recently shared some insight into the start of their relationship. During a joint appearance on the Talk To Me: The Debra Fileta Podcast, Erin and Ben noted that they began dating after meeting as students at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi. According to the couple, who share two children, Helen, 8, and Mae, 5, Ben told Erin he was in love with her less than a week into their relationship.
While Erin was thrilled with her new relationship, she was nervous about introducing her now-husband to her parents. She explained that her mother and father didn’t previously approve of her high school relationships, as she had some “bad influence in [her] life” during her teenage years.
“So they never liked any guy I ever dated or that they ever met. And then I was just so scared for them to meet Ben,” said Erin.
She said that two days after dating Ben, she brought him over to her parents’ house where her mother met him. According to Erin, her mother “loved him immediately.”
“[Ben] walked in the room and gave her a big hug. Like he just belonged there. Like this is like he’s always been doing this,” said Erin during the interview. “And then my dad, he met two days later. Daddy was home, and Ben came over and my dad immediately loved him. And that had just never happened.”
Erin also said she was surprised that her parents were immediately receptive towards Ben.
“Like immediately they were like, ‘He’s very good. He’s good.’ And I was like, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure? ‘Cause he’s very like poor and also a partier,'” she said with a laugh. “And they were like, ‘No, he’s wonderful.’ And I couldn’t understand what made them say that about him. I knew I felt that way, but I had had bad judgment as a teenager.”
Erin noted, however, that she and Ben were engaged for “almost three years” because her father wouldn’t let them “get married until [they] had college degrees.”
