The second day of the Italian Championships provided some serious fireworks, with a brace of national records from Sara Curtis in the 50 back and Lisa Angiolini in the 200 breast. That followed Michele Lamberti‘s 50 back record in the men’s event last night, with three national standards being reset in the first two days of swimming.

Although they did not clock a national record of their own, two of the brightest stars on the men’s side delivered some serious swims tonight. Simone Cerasuolo and Carlos D’Ambrosio showed that they have kicked on from a stellar World Championships last year, when Cerasuolo won the men’s 50 breast, and D’Ambrosio reset the Italian record in the 200 free as well as playing a key role on the silver medal-winning 4×100 free relay.

Cerasuolo was first up, taking a dominant win in the 100 breast over top seed Federico Poggio, who had been the only man to break 1:00 in the heats. Cerasuolo blasted out to a half second lead at halfway with a 27.16 opening 50, before closing in a strong 31.66 to take the win in 58.82.

That hacked more than seven tenths of a second off his PB of 59.54 from the 2023 version of these championships, and vaults him into the conversation for gold at the European Championships this summer. He sits as the second-fastest man in the world this season, and the fastest European as he dips under the 58.97 swum by Adam Peaty at the Aquatics GB Championships last night.

He moves to T-26th all-time, and gives Italy a fourth active swimmer under 59 seconds. Only the U.S. has had more than four swimmers ever break 59 seconds.

Men’s 100 Breast, Top Five Italian Men

Nicolo Martinenghi (2022) – 58.26 Federico Poggio (2023) – 58.73 Simone Cerasuolo (2026) – 58.82 Ludovico Viberti (2025) – 58.89 Fabio Scozzoli (2019) – 59.05

Cerasuolo’s time tonight would have been quick enough to claim bronze at the World Championships last summer, with Denis Petrashov placing 3rd in 58.88. Italy did get a medalist as Nicolo Martinenghi took silver in 58.58, 0.32 off his Italian record of 58.26. As a reminder, Martinenghi is not present at the Italian Championships this week due to injury, but he will have a second opportunity to qualify for the European Championships at the Sette Colli meet in June

Only seven European men have been faster in the last 36 months than the 58.82 Cerasuolo swam tonight. Of those, three have not been close to their times recently (Ilya Shymanovich, Evgenii Somov, and Federico Poggio), one has been struggling with injuries (Arno Kamminga), and one has struggled to hit his best in finals (Lucas Matzerath).

The other two are Adam Peaty and Nicolo Martinenghi, the #1 swimmer and #5 swimmer in history, but Peaty is still building after a season out last year and Martinenghi is currently injured. That makes this summer a great opportunity for Cerasuolo to make the jump up from his favored 50m distance to add some additional hardware.

Another big swim came in the final event tonight, as Carlos D’Ambrosio anchored Fiamme Gialle’s 4×200 free relay team home to victory in a stunning 1:44.37. That was the fastest split of the night by two seconds, and one of the fastest in history.

D’Ambrosio’s split was the second-fastest split ever recorded by an Italian man, behind only Filippo Magnini‘s 1:44.12 from the 2008 Olympic Games where Italy placed 4th. It also ranks as the 27th-fastest split in history, and 11th-fastest swum by a European man.

He split 50.53/53.84 tonight, staying strong throughout the race. That was faster on both halves than the 51/01/54.59 he split on his previous best flying relay swim at the World Junior Championships last year, and a faster second 100 than either his semi-final swim (54.31) or final swim (53.96) at the senior World Championships last year.

Italy placed 7th in the 4×200 free relay in Singapore last summer, with D’Ambrosio’s 1:45.75 leadoff their fastest leg. He had swum 1:45.23 in the semi-finals of the individual event before placing 6th in the final in 1:45.27, with the first of those swims setting a new Italian Record in the event.

Still being 18 years old last summer, D’Ambrosio also competed at the World Junior Championships a few weeks later, splitting 1:45.60 to anchor the 4×200 free relay as they took bronze. With his split tonight he enters new territory with his first relay swim under 1:45.

Jacopo Barbotti, born in 2006,  split 1:46.37 for second-place Circolo Canottieri Aniene. That was 1.32 seconds faster than the 1:47.69 PB he swam at the Campeonato de Espana Primavera last month, which was huge new lifetime best. Tonight’s split was faster than two of the men on Italy’s 4×200 free relay last summer.

D’Ambrosio did not actually qualify individually for the Italian team for the World Championships at this meet last year, only making the cut at the Sette Colli. However, he looks primed to nail down a spot for the European Championships early this year, with the 100 free up tomorrow and the 200 free on Friday. He placed 2nd and 1st in those events respectively last year in times of 48.60 and 1:46.32, but is in line to be much faster this time around.
