The spate of pitcher injuries at the big league level gets the most attention, but there have been a number of injuries at Triple-A Iowa for the Cubs, too, and that has combined to REALLY thin the group of available arms. If the big league team is having to pull up a bunch of guys AND a number of the remaining arms are injured, well, then the Triple-A club is going to have to make some moves. And unlikely the big league dynamic, the Triple-A club can’t just “call up” a bunch of guys from Double-A, who are there for developmental reasons.
That is to say, I’m not surprised to see that the Cubs have signed former big leaguers Paul Campbell and Ty Blach to minor league deals, and they’re already active at Iowa.
Campbell, 30, last pitched in the big leagues in 2021 with the Marlins, before an injury cost him time and then he couldn’t lock down an affiliated spot after the 2024 season. He spent last year pitching in the Mexican League, and now he’ll get a chance to work with the Cubs. It’s unlikely he’ll emerge as a reclamation type, though I will concede I am basing that primarily on unimpressive numbers in the minors in 2024 and in Mexico in 2025.
Blach, 35, was a long-time Giants and Rockies starter, who struggled in recent years with the Rockies, though it’s hard to know how much that actually means. The soft-tossing lefty spent 2025 at Triple-A in the Rangers’ system, putting up decent enough numbers overall, but again, nothing that necessarily jumps out at you as far as reclamation opportunities go. Like Campbell, I expect this move is more about emergency depth, and also covering innings at Triple-A so that the Cubs can keep prospects otherwise on schedule.
At Iowa, in addition to all the promotions up to the big league club, they have seen injuries to Jaxon Wiggins, Gavin Hollowell, Jeff Brigham, and Jack Neely, plus Kyle Wright and Trent Thornton are still rehabbing.
