It’s budget season for local government, with budget sessions for Orange County Commissioners, the Carrboro Town Council, and the Chatham County school board. Local elected officials also have other big-ticket items on this week’s agendas as well: the Chapel Hill Town Council will discuss climate action and downtown development, while the Pittsboro town board will tackle the controversy surrounding Flock safety cameras.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, April 13. Click here for the full agenda, which includes a discussion of trespassing issues related to unhoused individuals at the Hillsborough Youth Athletic Association field, plus a proposal to reorganize the town’s Community Services department.
Orange County Commissioners meet twice this week: Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center, and Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Tuesday’s meeting includes a presentation from Durham Tech and a discussion about possible changes to the county’s Longtime Homeowners Assistance Program. Thursday’s meeting is a budget work session focusing on county manager Travis Myren’s 10-year capital investment plan. Click here for links to both agendas.
The Carrboro Town Council also meets twice this week: Tuesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 16, both at 6 p.m. Tuesday’s meeting will focus on next year’s budget and capital improvement plan; Thursday’s meeting is a special meeting to hear a presentation from El Centro Hispano. The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 15. Their agenda includes a public hearing on a proposed downtown hotel, plus another public hearing on the allocation of Community Development Block Grant funds. Council members will also get an update on the implementation of the town’s Climate Action Plan; a staff report finds that the town has been exceeding its emission-reduction goals so far. Also on the agenda is a proposal to reduce the size of the Town Council from eight members to six, and increase the mayor’s term from two years to four; the council won’t take any action on that this week, but they’ll set a date for a future public discussion later this month. Chatham and Durham Counties
The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, April 13. This week’s agenda includes possible action on parkland in Chatham Park South Village, as well as a discussion of Flock safety cameras, which are meant to aid police in traffic enforcement but have raised serious concerns about privacy violations. The Chatham County school board meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 13. Their agenda includes a discussion of next year’s budget (including a resolution urging the General Assembly to pass a budget on the state level) as well as an update on combating the measles in Chatham County.
