After swimming his second-fastest ever 200 freestyle less than 24 hours ago, the 25-year-old American dominated the men’s 100 free tonight with a massive personal best time of 47.51.
Curry opened in 22.27 and closed in 25.24, beating the field by almost a full second to become the 28th-fastest performer in history and the seventh-best American of all time, tying Michael Phelps.
Top 10 American Men’s LCM 100 Free Performers All-Time:
Jack Alexy – 46.81, 2025 Caeleb Dressel – 46.96, 2019 Chris Guiliano – 47.25, 2024 David Walters – 47.33, 2009 Ryan Held – 47.39, 2019 Patrick Sammon – 47.47, 2025 Michael Phelps – 47.51, 2008 & Brooks Curry – 47.51, 2026 – Nathan Adrian – 47.52, 2012 Jason Lezak – 47.58, 2008 & Destin Lasco – 47.58, 2025Entering this competition, Curry’s career best rested at the 47.90 he turned in during the semifinals of the 2022 World Championships, so he sliced just under half a second off that mark.
Curry had only ever broken 48 on one other occasion, another 47.9 in 2023 where he split 22.6/25.2; he’s clearly found a way to open much quicker through the first 50 while still coming home right on par with those previous sub-48s.
Curry now checks in as the 4th-quickest man in the world so far this season:

While training partner and American Record holder Jack Alexy is a class above the domestic field with his 46.81 PB, Curry joins Chris Guiliano (47.25), Patrick Sammon (47.47), and Destin Lasco (47.58) in the mid-47 range, and assuming he repeats this time at the 2027 and/or 2028 Trials, he looks like a shoo-in for at minimum a spot on the relay roster.
Curry began his collegiate career at LSU, winning an SEC title in the 100 yard free. Two years year later, he was the NCAA Champion in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. In 2023, he moved to California to train in Berkeley as a post-grad with the Golden Bears.
Curry was a fixture on Team USA’s relays for a few years. At the Tokyo 2020(1) Olympics, he won a gold medal as part of the 400 free relay. He went on to win three relay medals (one of each color) at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, as well as take fifth in the 100 free (48.00).
He narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2023 Worlds after finishing ninth in the 50 (22.14), 100 (48.26), and 200 (1:46.39) free at Trials, though his 200 time would have been good enough for fifth in the ‘A’ final had he qualified.
Curry bounced back in 2024 and was Paris-bound after finishing fifth in the 200 free (1:45.89) at Trials, the only time he has broken 1:46. He went on to place 12th in the 100 free (48.62) and 20th in the 50 free (22.35) at the Games, and split 1:45.96 on the second leg of the 800 free relay in prelims before being substituted out for the final, where the squad went on to win silver.
At the World Championship Trials last June, Curry fell ill with an undisclosed illness and was unable to finish the entirety of the meet. He won the ‘B’ final of the 100 free in 47.96, just .06 seconds shy of his best at the time, and was seventh in the ‘B’ final of the 200 free in 1:47.50, with his prelims time of 1:46.33 coming in within half a second of his best.
Of note, Curry’s time tonight would have been fourth at those Trials.
