Bears Insider Says Don’t Rule Out an Offensive Tackle With Pick No. 25 ...Middle East

In the past, this has been the time of year when we start to zero in on the prospects most likely to be drafted by the Chicago Bears. But with several positions of need that haven’t been addressed this offseason yet, it has become increasingly difficult to get a grasp of which direction the Bears will go.

With that in mind, I find it interesting that ESPN’s Courtney Cronin suggests that it is not out of the realm of possibility that the Chicago Bears will take an offensive tackle with their first-round pick. More from Cronin:

Depending on how many edge rushers are off the board by the time Chicago picks at No. 25, selecting a D-end is logical, but don’t rule out an offensive lineman in the first round.

Ben Johnson also spoke candidly about the “uncertainty” at left tackle amid Ozzy Trapilo’s ruptured patellar tendon, and the Bears were recently at Alabama’s pro day getting an up-close look at Kadyn Proctor, one of the top offensive tackles in the draft.

There seems to be some growing buzz around the idea of the Bears using the No. 25 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on an offensive tackle. A quick rundown of some names that have been offered up as possible left tackle targets on the first night of the upcoming NFL Draft:

Kadyn Proctor, Alabama — The Crimson Tide’s Consensus All-American has been connected to Chicago in an increasing number of recent mock drafts. I wonder how much that has to do with Bears GM Ryan Poles’ visit to Alabama’s pro day event in March. Max Iheanachor, Arizona State — Shortly after visiting Alabama, Poles was spotted at Arizona State’s pro day. Rebilas-Imagn Images Caleb Lumu, Utah — Not only was Lomu name-checked as a possible Bears target in this recent CBS Sports mock draft, the 2024 Freshman All-American was reportedly set to visit Halas Hall on a Top 30 visit. I’m not sure how much stock to put into Tpp 30 visits with this regime, but it is worth noting that Chicago’s front office is doing its due diligence here. Blake Miller, Clemson — Miller is a right tackle by trade who made 54 starts at the position during his collegiate career. A three-time All-ACC player for the Tigers, Miller is another who is relatively new on our list of plausible fits for the Bears’ first-round pick options.

Early April is when the NFL’s best front offices put out so much information that every path offered up by pundits regarding a team’s NFL Draft plan seems plausible. And while the Bears need a few more quality drafts before I can confidently put their front office in that category, the fact that league insiders have yet to hone in on Chicago’s draft plans speaks volumes about the team’s situation and the folks at Halas Hall’s ability to keep things under wraps. At a minimum, I can say — with confidence — that Chicago’s front office is doing a good job of keeping everyone on their toes and making us feel like truly anything is possible on NFL Draft weekend.

I’m torn about which direction I want to see the Bears go in with their first pick. Choosing an interior defensive lineman, edge defender, or safety to bolster the defense would be a sensible move. But if a player who projects to be a lock-down left tackle protecting quarterback Caleb Williams’ blindside for the foreseeable future is available at pick No. 25, it would be malpractice not to run to the podium to announce that selection. We’re only 12 days away from finding out what the Bears ultimately do with their picks. I’m getting antsy thinking about it.
