Chicago police were searching for a man armed with an axe who damaged several Chicago firefighters’ vehicles outside a fire station in the city’s Englewood neighborhood.
At around 6 a.m. on Friday, Chicago police were called to Chicago Fire Department Engine Company 84, near West 59th Street and South Lafayette Avenue, after damage was reported to seven vehicles. Patrick Quane, a spokesman for the Chicago Firefighters Union, said firefighters heard commotion and went to investigate. Once outside, they saw a man swinging an axe at their vehicles before fleeing westbound.
Footage captured at the scene showed Chicago police and firefighters examining the damage.
A side window in one SUV was shattered, while several other vehicles sustained dents and puncture marks.
Police said no injuries were reported, and as of Friday evening, it remained unknown if any items were taken.
Quane said the incident marks the second time in less than a week that firefighters’ vehicles were damaged with an axe outside a Chicago firehouse.
“It’s very scary,” he said. “We’re here to help people. We’re here to do our jobs and show up to our job and help people.” You know, to have to worry now about our cars and our vehicles being damaged, it’s very disheartening to our members.”
