Amy Grant has a reassuring health update for her fans.
The “Baby Baby” singer, 65, visited TODAY on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and was asked how she’s doing after a bike accident left her with a brain injury. She also had open-heart surgery a few years before that.
“I’m good,” Grant said. “I’m firing on all pistons.”

She stopped by to promote the deluxe edition of The Me That Remains, which came out Oct. 2. The original album, released May 8, was her first album of original songs in 13 years, according to the deluxe edition announcement.
‘There Are No Guarantees’
Grant said her health scares found their way into the new music.
“Everything influences music,” she said. “When you’re a kid, you feel invincible, and all of it kind of makes you go, ‘Dang, we would like to have the day we’re in,’ and there are no guarantees.”
The title track started as a poem, she said, and she asked her producer, Mac McAnally, to help her finish it. “Everybody is recovering from something,” she said.

‘I Don’t Remember It’
Grant suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2022 bike accident. When she talked to TODAY in 2023, she said she has no memory of the crash. “I don’t remember it,” she said.
She forgot some of her own lyrics, too. She couldn’t recall the verse of “Tennessee Christmas,” a song she sings every year, so she used a teleprompter for her holiday shows. “I had a teleprompter all 22 shows,” she said.
Two years after the accident, she spent a full day doing tests with a neuropsychologist at Vanderbilt, she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show in June. She scored in the “20-something percentile” in processing.
“I can’t do the one-liner,” she remembered telling the doctor. “I feel like all the action is happening in the living room. I’m down the hall in a side room.”
The doctor told her to “lean in,” she said. “Lean into life. Lean into everything that gives you sustenance and purpose.”
So she set up a tiny creative space she calls Craftopia, sat down in a child’s chair and wrote the first lines of what became the album’s title track. Earlier this year, she also shared the advice her husband gave her on one of her darker days.
‘I Am Glad to Be Alive’
Before the accident, Grant had open-heart surgery to fix a birth defect that doctors found by chance. “It was such a fluke that they found out I was born with a birth defect,” she said in a 2021 interview.
“I just remember the doctor saying, ‘We need to go on and get this taken care of before you turn 60,'” she said. Later, she saw that the doctor had written that she “probably would have died by 62.”
“I am glad to be alive,” she said.
The bike accident also changed her relationship with her kids, Grant said on TODAY. They’d sit on the front porch and tell stories about her while she was, in her words, “coming back to myself.”
“We have five kids between us, Vince and me, and at this point in life, we get to choose to invest in each other,” she said. “When you’re all under one roof, it’s just like forced. But when you’re grown, you choose.”
Grant has been married to Vince Gill since 2000. Two of her daughters, Sarah Cannon and Corrina Gill, sing with her on the album’s “The Other Side of Goodbye.”
She was pregnant with her first daughter, Millie, when she wrote “Baby Baby” about her, she said in the 2021 interview. The song spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991, according to chart records.
On TODAY, Grant said she wrote it with Keith Thomas, and her pop label once floated the idea of turning it into a duet with Aretha Franklin. Her take? “Just brown bag it, put it out and see if anybody likes it,” she said.
This fall, she’ll join Michael W. Smith and CeCe Winans on their Christmas Together tour starting Nov. 27, then play her annual Christmas at the Ryman shows with Gill in December.
