After nearly two decades living at the Lions Tigers & Bears Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Alpine, Jillian, an African lion, has died, sanctuary leaders announced Friday.
Rescued from an overcrowded facility in Louisiana in April 2007 — alongside siblings Suri and Bakari (who died in 2022) — Jillian suffered from chronic health problems due to the circumstances of her early cubhood. Along with age-related health complications, Lions Tigers & Bears made the decision to humanely euthanize Jillian Friday morning.
When she made the transition to Alpine, Jillian was known for lazing in the grass with her siblings and eagerly anticipating mealtimes.
“Jillian’s life is a true success story,” said Bobbi Brink, founder and director of Lions Tigers & Bears. “She was rescued from horrible conditions and given the chance to live out her life in a safe and nurturing environment. She was a longtime member of our family and deeply loved by so many. While this loss is incredibly difficult, we take comfort in knowing she experienced the life she always deserved.”
According to Brink, following Bakari’s death, Jillian held a special place in the hearts of staff and visitors as the sanctuary’s only lion.
“Jillian’s legacy is one of resilience, love and second chances,” a statement from Lions Tigers & Bears read. “Her story will continue to inspire Lions Tigers & Bears’ ongoing mission to rescue animals from neglect, abuse and exploitation.”
More than 65 rescued animals continue to call the Alpine ranch home. The nonprofit facility was founded in 2002 on 142 acres and provides naturalistic habitats, on-site veterinary care and educational and volunteer programs.
