Anton Frondell is the Real Deal ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

When the Blackhawks landed the third overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the opportunity to select another potential difference maker to help the offense. When they called Anton Frondell‘s name, there was a lot of excitement for a bigger forward coming to complement the top of the lineup that was starting to emerge in the NHL.

The book on Frondell was that he had an elite shot — a hammer of a one-timer. He plays a physical, 200-foot game and is defensively responsible. And he knows how to score.

Frondell spent this season successfully playing in Sweden before joining the Blackhawks after a first-round SHL playoff exit. He became the first teenager to score 20 goals in the SHL since Daniel Sedin.

The question when he joined the Blackhawks was if those skills would immediately translate to the NHL.

So far, so good.

Over his nine games in the NHL, Frondell has moved from skating on the wing with Connor Bedard to centering a line with Tyler Bertuzzi and Ilya Mikheyev. He admitted after the loss to Carolina on Thursday night that the move back to the middle has been a big learning curve — especially against NHL competition. He kinda chuckled that he lost most of his faceoffs in the first couple games but it’s getting better.

Frankly, to the eye test, faceoffs might be the biggest struggle he’s had.

After his first career multi-goal game on Thursday night, Frondell said he’s been a little surprised he’s produced as much as he has early on. He deferred credit to his teammates, noting last night that Louis Crevier made two great plays to set him up.

And he’s done all of this with minimal practice time to really dig into the systems.

I’m not saying his play has been spotless. Frondell knows there have been miscues; he pointed to a few moments specifically from the game against the Jets after the loss on Thursday night. But the box score and analytics have loved what we’ve seen so far.

“It shows you how good his defensive instincts are for him to play as good as he’s played… without really feeling comfortable in the system and without really feeling comfortable playing center yet,” Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said before Thursday’s game.

Thru his nine appearances in the NHL, Frondell has skated 123:13 at 5-on-5. At even strength, he leads the Blackhawks during that stretch with six points (three goals, three assists) — he’s tied with Bertuzzi and Crevier, who had the primary assist on both of Frondell’s goals on Thursday night.

At 5-on-5, here’s what Frondell has put together over his nine appearances:

21 shots on net — 2nd on the team (behind Bedard) 1.61 individual expected goals for — tied for 4th on the team (Lardis, Bedard and Nazar) 35 individual shot attempts — 2nd on the team (Bedard) 17 individual scoring chances for — 2nd on the team (Lardis) 7 individual high danger chances — tied for 3rd on the team (Lardis and Bertuzzi) 2 rush attempts — tied with Bedard for most on the team

If we include his power play time, Frondell has attempted 51 shots in 160:03 in nine games. Only Bedard (54 in 179:24) has attempted more shots.

Frondell leads the Blackhawks with eight points during the nine games since he arrived in the NHL. And he’s done that in eight different buildings — with his NHL career starting on an East Coast trip, a single home game and then a trip to the West Coast.

Here are his three goals — all scored at the United Center.

For all that we’ve talked about many of the young Blackhawks working thru the grind of either their first full professional season or their first full NHL season, it’s worth noting that Frondell appeared in 43 regular season games with Djurgårdens in the SHL — a very good league — and another 11 for Sweden internationally, including seven at the World Juniors where he was named the tournament’s best forward.

Frondell has picked up a ton of frequent flyer miles and goals this season, and he doesn’t turn 19 until May 7.
