Tom Holland has watched Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and has some epic praise for the upcoming mythic adventure film.
Speaking to GQ, the actor said, “I can tell you that it is an absolute masterpiece, and I’m taking myself out of that equation.” Holland added the “fantastic” film was full of stunning practical effects.
“It’s unlike anything that I’ve ever seen before,” Holland said. “I think when I saw the movie, I found myself asking a question that I haven’t asked about a movie for a long time, which is, ‘How did you do that?’”
Continued Holland: “There were certain sequences in the movie where I’m watching it and I’m just sort of thinking like, ‘How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG.’ And then after [watching] the movie [I asked Nolan], ‘That was definitely CG, right?’ And he’s like, ‘No, no, no, that’s all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared.’ So I think fans are going to be really, really blown away by the set pieces and sequences throughout the movie, because even as someone that was there on the day and was in the film, I was absolutely blown away by the scale, the scope, his ability to navigate such an intricate and heartfelt story in the middle of this insane kind of action movie. So it’s one of my proudest achievements as an actor and I’m so touched that Chris gave me the opportunity to be in the film.”
Holland also talked about his upcoming Sony-Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day, for which he was recently shooting brand new footage.
The actor noted that he was in London filming additional scenes for the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie, which is released in theaters July 31 (while The Odyssey is released one week earlier, July 17).
Calling the new footage “really, really fun,” Holland emphasized that the reshoots didn’t mean that the film wasn’t already good.
“I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need,” he said. “The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff.”
Marvel boss Kevin Feige is an advocate for having a flexible and evolving script and making changes during filming and after principal photography, a process he calls “plus-ing.”
Last July, Feige described to The Hollywood Reporter how there was “plus-ing” constantly on the set of Avengers: Doomsday.
“There’s plus-ing happening every day on the Avengers: Doomsday set right now, and it is amazing to watch because what those filmmakers, those actors, both the ones that are playing these characters for the first or second time and the one playing them for the 10th or 12th time, are the best in the world at it, and know these characters so well,” said Feige. “So if they have an idea, you want to listen to it and you want to adjust to it and you want to improve it. I wouldn’t want to change that.”
