The first smart home device I ever owned was a smart thermostat. I was living in an apartment and wanted to try to have better control over the utility bills. It was a very simple “smart” thermostat and really only gave me the option of scheduling the HVAC system to turn on or off. It was basic control and smart thermostats have come a very long way since then. Since we’ve owned our current home (nearly 15 years now), we have had a smart thermostat installed. We started with a Nest and then moved to the Ecobee thermostat system.

Aqara, a leader in the IoT space, announced the addition of the Thermostat Hub W200 to their smart home product lineup. Revealed at CES 2026, the W200 is designed to be a central smart home hub in addition to an HVAC controller. I was very excited to get an early production unit of the W200 to test out. So far, it’s my favorite smart thermostat to date.

About Aqara Thermostat Hub W200

The Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 is a 4-in-1 smart home hub that combines HVAC management, Matter hub functionality, and advanced presence sensing technology into a single wall-mounted touchscreen. It’s one of the first thermostats to support Apple’s Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance features, which allows the system to automatically adjust climate settings based on occupancy, sleep, or away status. This will also allow the W200 to optimize energy usage according to local grid conditions.

Able to manage over 50 device types, the W200 can also act as a hub for the Aqara device ecosystem and third-party Matter devices that support Thread, Zigbee, and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity. The W200 can even act as a security interface when paired with Aqara doorbells and smart locks.

The Thermostat Hub W200 is compatible with most 24V HVAC systems and works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, and SmartThings.

The Thermostat Hub W200 Matte Kit will be sold on Apple store from September 2026 for $169.99.

Installation

The Thermostat Hub W200 comes packaged with all the things you’ll need to get it installed. Having installed several smart thermostats I can attest to the fact that it is much easier than you think it will be. The box includes the thermostat body, the wiring terminal block, instructions, labels and mounting hardware. As mentioned above, there is an optional C-Wire Adapter that can be purchased if needed.

The first step in the installation process is to turn off the power to your HVAC system. It is usually on its own breaker in your breaker box so it should be easy to identify. Our HVAC actually has a switch installed on it so that it can easily be switched off and on as needed by service personnel. This is a very important step because one wrong move and you can cost yourself a few hundred dollars when you have to have your system reset because you caused a short in the system. I did this once and fortunately, the technician pointed out the switch to me so that wouldn’t happen again.

Once you have the power shut off to the system, you can remove the old thermostat. Make sure you take a photo of the existing wiring setup before you unhook the wires. Use the provided stickers to label the wires so that you can easily match them to the wiring terminal block in the next step. Disconnecting the old wires will either be done using a screwdriver (if it’s an older conventional thermostat), or by pressing the terminal button to release it from the block if you have a different smart thermostat.

After you have all the wires labeled, you can pull the old thermostat off the wall. The next step is to mount the base plate (terminal block) and the trim plate. You will stack the two together, feed the loose wires through the center hole, and insert the screws into the wall to hold them securely. There is a built-in level on the base plate so you can ensure the assembly is mounted correctly. Since I was replacing a different smart thermostat, I didn’t have to drill any new holes because I could just reuse the older ones.

Once the two plates are secure, you can begin connecting the wires to the terminal block. The terminal block makes the wiring process very simple and it’s probably the only reason I feel comfortable swapping thermostats. Each slot is labeled and all you have to do is match the wire to the slot and insert it. It locks into place when you release the button for the slot.

After the wiring is done, you place the screen (main body) onto the terminal block. You want to make sure it’s lined up correctly and then press it in firmly. The screen will snap into place and then you can turn the power back on to the HVAC system. That’s it. Even though this process used to intimidate me, the design of smart thermostats has made it almost fool proof to complete the installation process.

System Initialization & App Setup

When the HVAC system’s power is turned back on, the W200 will power on. This will take a few minutes, but it will eventually ask you to pair the device to the Aqara Home app or using Matter. I started the process with only connecting to Matter and Apple Home. I was curious how it would work without being bound to the Aqara system. As it turned out, the thermostat worked well, but I was missing out on the advanced settings and being able to update the firmware, which unlocks a lot of security features.

I was very impressed with the simplicity of the setup process. Once I had it added to Apple Home, the system initialized and I could navigate the device settings using the menu system on the thermostat. One of the things I really appreciate about this thermostat is when you wake it up, it takes you to the temperature setting screen first and allows you to change your comfort settings. To access the rest of the settings/menus you swipe down from the top of the screen. If you have a configuration setup, you can access it by swiping to the left on the home screen. Other smart thermostat’s I’ve used haven’t made it that easy to find the correct settings.

Since this is a newly released product, I believe there are a few quirks associated with it. I also believe those will be addressed and improved with upcoming firmware releases. That said, one of the things I ran into was a little hiccup when I tried to connect the W200 to the Aqara app. There is an option to scan a QR code to bind the thermostat to the Aqara home app and when I did that, the app told me that the accessory was not compatible. I was about to dismiss that as a new product bug, but on a whim, I decided to try adding the code manually. For some reason, that worked when scanning the QR code did not.

Once I was connected to the Aqara app, I updated the firmware and then went to add a third-party Matter device. I chose a new set of Govee String Lights since they had never been set up before. I connected them to the Govee app first and then added them using the Aqara app. When I tried to add them as a ‘child device’ to the hub, they simply appeared as another device in the dashboard of the Aqara app. I have basic control over them, but I was really hoping to be able to add them to the thermostat so that I could control them from the screen. At this point, I haven’t been able to make this happen.

Aside from that, control of the thermostat through the app or through Apple Home has been solid. I haven’t had any issues with changing temperatures using Siri or on the device itself.

Climate Control & Presence Sensing

I’ve been very impressed with how well the W200 handles temperature settings and target thresholds. With our previous systems, they weren’t exactly precise, but I’ve found the W200 to be very accurate. So far, the thermostat has proven itself to be reliable.

When it comes to the presence detection, it’s been a little less reliable. At first, I had it set to medium sensitivity (the default) and realized that I still had to tap the screen to wake it up. So, I changed the setting to low and it seemed to be more active. The thermostat is in our main hallway so activity shouldn’t be a problem.

We have the Adaptive Temperature in Apple Home enabled, but chose not to enable the Grid Forecast. I’ve noticed that the setting has worked with the W200 and has changed with the time of day as well as our presence.

Conclusion

Overall, the W200 is a strong smart thermostat with an easy installation process and strong ecosystem from Aqara. It takes my favorite smart device features (i.e. Matter integration, presence sensing, etc.) and pulls them together in an intuitive smart hub device. I feel like my experience with the W200 has been smooth and dependable. I think it’s a great investment or upgrade for people who enjoy smart home automation.
