How collecting fidget toys can benefit college students ...Middle East

From the squeezing of stress balls to designing 3D printed fidget toys, many students are finding comfort in collecting stress toys to manage their academic stress.

Bella Toquero, a freshman majoring in kinesiology, said that her favorite stress toy is the Nee Doh because of its soft texture and diverse selection. She often buys the toy to give to her friends, as well as buying them for herself.

“I feel like stress toys are more portable and you can bring them anywhere without a mess,” Taquito said. “I use it when I study to stay focused on my work.”

College students use fidget toys to cope with their academic stress, helping them remain engaged with their work. The digital era has caused students to become easily distracted by their devices, making these toys even more necessary for some students.

“I think it’s because we’re adapting to a different environment,” said Bayli Drobil, a junior majoring in English. “You’re sort of expected to perform at a higher level than a lot of high school, so people use that as sort of an outlet to kind of calm down when they’re feeling stressed.”

Although fidget toys are used to manage stress, they have also become a hobby for some students. The variety of shapes and colors draws many students to amass large collections of toys.

Drobil said her sister has a large collection of stress toys that she is almost territorial about due to her strong emotional attachment to them. One of her favorites is the Nee Doh.

Collecting stress toys is not the only way students are using stress toys as a hobby. Stephen Frank, a sophomore majoring in aerospace engineering, spends his free time designing a wide variety of his own stress toys that he 3D prints and gives to others.

“One that I have made a lot that is pretty popular is the infinity cubes,” Frank said. “I have stuck to making ones that are quieter, which has made it more accessible for people to use.

With the immediacy of technology and the digital age, students are also substituting these toys as an alternative to devices. Frank said that he uses these toys in the awkward 10 to 30 seconds of down time to focus on his school work.

The popularity of stress toys among college students has turned into both a hobby and a tool to stay focused on work. Academic stress continues to be a prevalent issue within students, so the ability to have these colorful collections is an amusing way to cope with the struggles of mental health.

“I think it gives people a good outlet for what they’re struggling with and what they’re stressed about,” Drobil said. “A stress toy is a good way to calm yourself down if it has a purpose for you.”
