A cyclist was killed and a 22-year-old woman critically injured when an unidentified driver ran a red light and struck both the cyclist and another vehicle before crashing into a pole and fleeing in the early hours of Sunday morning in Chicago, police said.
Around 1:20 a.m., an unidentified man was driving a red SUV eastbound at a high rate of speed on West 63rd Street near South Kedzie Avenue on the border of Chicago’s Marquette Park and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods.
He ran a red light and struck a man who was riding a bicycle before crashing into a silver vehicle that was traveling southbound on South Kedzie Avenue with a solid green light, police said.
The driver of the red SUV fled on foot from the crash before police arrived, leaving behind a critically injured 22-year-old woman who was a passenger in his vehicle, the cyclist, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, and a 60-year-old woman who was driving the silver vehicle he crashed into.
The 60-year-old woman was treated at the scene, police said, and the 22-year-old passenger of the red SUV was transported to a local hospital for treatment where she was initially listed in critical condition.
Red and yellow police tape wrapped around the intersection where the crash occurred as police investigated for hours. A badly damaged red SUV was partially wrapped around a pole at the intersection.
The intersection and part of Kedzie remained closed for roughly 8 hours as police investigated at the crash scene until around 9 a.m.
This is at least the second time in 2026 a cyclist has been struck and killed by a driver on Chicago streets. In late January, a 33-year-old man who was later cited for failure to reduce speed struck a male cyclist on the 8600 block of West Irving Park Road, according to police. The cyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Just a couple weeks ago, 15-year-old Violet Harris was killed in a hit-and-run on March 22nd while riding a scooter with friends near 77th and Exchange in South Shore. Police are still looking for the driver responsible for killing Harris, while also separately looking for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run that killed another student at Harris’ high school, Lania Smith, as she crossed the street just 9 days after Harris was killed.
Authorities are continuing to investigate.
