Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall spoke about his Senate run on the University campus Wednesday. The event was hosted by UA College Republicans.
During his talk, Marshall highlighted the parts of his campaign and political career that he was most proud of including his stance on vaccine mandates and his support of the border control initiatives President Donald Trump has put in place.
Marshall has been the Alabama attorney general for almost 10 years. Before he began his campaign for Senate, Marshall thought that he was done with politics.
He said the position he held at the time was not fulfilling for him “for a variety of reasons,” but was pulled back into politics when Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville called one day and told him that he was thinking about leaving the Senate.
“It sparked my interest because what I haven’t really been able to do now, for almost nine and a half years as attorney general, was fight the battles that I think matter to the people of Alabama,” Marshall said.
One of those “battles” took place back in 2020, during COVID-19. The state government was cracking down on vaccination mandates, making it so that COVID-19 vaccines were required by the state. Marshall and his team pushed back against these mandates.
“While it was a difficult period for all, there’s only certain limits in this government that are able to regulate personal health care decisions you make today,” Marshall said.
In one such case, Marshall supported the Health Freedom Defense Fund Inc. and California Educators for Medical Freedom. These two entities, along with a few unnamed others, were suing the Los Angeles Unified School District for their mandate that stated employees of the district were required to get the COVID-19 vaccination or risk termination.
HFDF and CEMF saw this mandate as an infringement of their fundamental right to refuse medical treatment. “California’s political theater of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for school employees is obviously unconstitutional,” Marshall later said in a press release.
Will Stecker, treasurer of UACR, said that Marshall’s appearance on campus gave students a unique opportunity to meet him. “It’s really important to get his perspective on local state politics,” Stecker said. “We think making sure that we give these people voices for students to directly hear from the candidates themselves, provides a unique opportunity to them.”
