The Chicago Cubs have a lot of baseball to play today, but before that all goes down, our day begins with a trio of roster moves. All of these were either predictable or even already reported, but they’re official now, so let’s put it down on paper.
First, as expected, Cade Horton is heading to the 15-day Injured List, retroactive to yesterday, setting the EARLIEST possible return for around April 19/20. But sadly, I think anyone counting on a stay that brief is probably being too optimistic. Horton still needs to come back to Chicago for some imaging on his forearm. And until we know those scans are negative for anything structural or strained, we just have to operate like he’s not coming back for a while.
The worst case remains something horrible, like surgery and a missed season. The best case is that he really did catch this early enough to prevent any longterm punishment for the rest of us, but still needs some time off to rest and heal it up before returning. And even that would then potentially require a minor league rehab assignment. We simply do not know.
In his place, as Jacob Zanolla reported yesterday, the Cubs are calling up left-handed reliever Riley Martin. We do not expect Martin to be the primary substitute for the duration of Cade Horton’s absence. But until we know how long he’ll actually be out, and thus, what kind of replacement the Cubs need, just grabbing an extra reliever was the path of least resistance.

Roberts, 28, has been in the Cubs extended bullpen mix for the last couple of seasons, and always brings his crazy sweeper with him.
