CUBS LINEUP — It was an extremely low-scoring affair, but the Cubs were able to pull off the win in the first half of today’s doubleheader. That means they have a chance this evening to win their second consecutive series and FINALLY get over .500 for the first time this year. Shota Imanaga is on the bump for the Cubs and he’s facing fellow lefty Parker Messick.
Be warned, though, Messick has been pretty good in his young career, and the Cubs don’t seem to be doing great offensively overall and especially against lefties. Alas.
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale in Cleveland.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Nico Hoerner, 2B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, DH Carson Kelly, C Michael Busch, 1B Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, RF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dylan Carlson, LFWell, would you look at that. Dylan Carlson IS alive, after all. He has not started a single game yet this year and has yet to step up to the plate even once. It’s so strange that it took this long (and effectively required both Suzuki to be missing AND there to be a doubleheader with a lefty starter). But we are finally here.
He will obviously go 4-4 with a double and 3 RBI today.
With Carlson in left field, Ian Happ gets the DH treatment. But hopefully, he has more luck than he did in Game 1, which included an ugly 0-4, 4K performance.
Other notes: Nico Hoerner moves up to leadoff, Michael Busch moves down, PCA moves WAY down, Matt Shaw is out in right field, Carson Kelly is behind the plate, and that’s that.
The offense was nowhere to be found in Game 1. It would be nice if they could turn up this afternoon for the finale.
Cleveland Guardians Lineup:
Steven Kwan, CF Angel Martinez, LF Jose Ramirez, 3B David Fry, RF Chase DeLauter, DH Rhys Hoskins, 1B Gabriel Arias, SS Austin Hudges, C Brayan Rocchio, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP
Strictly speaking, Shota Imanaga’s first start of the year wasn’t good. He allowed four earned runs in just 5.0 innings of work, and the biggest damage came straight out of our biggest concerns: a 3-run homer.
Buuuuuuut I’m not sure he was actually all that bad.
For one, the homer Imanaga allowed came on a pitch that was WAY below the zone and to a batter, Joey Wiemer, that started the season off hotter than literally any other player in baseball. For another, Imanaga recorded seven strikeouts on a crazy-impressive 17 whiffs.
And even better, his fastball velocity was noticeably up, especially in the first inning, which is a good sign because it had fallen dramatically last season.
2025 avg FB velo: 90.8 MPH2026 Game 1: 92.1 MPH
And seeing as he sits right on that threshold of low velocity, that extra 1.5-ish can be a huge difference maker. Bottom line here, I think Imanaga is going to have a better day today.
Cleveland Guardians: Parker Messick, LHP
Parker Messick kicked off his year with a DOMINATING six-inning shutout of the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Against Messick, the league’s best team managed just five hits with no walks and five strikeouts at home. That is as impressive as it gets. And it comes after a short 7-start debut that went equally well last season: 7 starts, 39.2 IP, 2.72 ERA (2.98 FIP).
Indeed, Messick was kind of a beast last season, with 38 strikeouts and a 48% groundball rate over those seven starts. Opposing batters walked just six times in those games and managed just seven barrels total (5.8 barrel%). He’s going to be a very tough matchup for a Cubs team without Seiya Suzuki in their lineup, who is also playing in the second half of a doubleheader on the road.
