The Blackhawks finally got back in the win column last night. They had a two-goal lead going into the third period and were able to hang on. The Hawks were able to roll their four lines pretty confidently the entire night and saw strong play from all four.
A lot of talk lately about the Blackhawks’ young defensive group in a lot of places. Let’s dig into some of what folks are saying to start our Easter Sunday.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton (yes, former goaltender Carter Hutton) talked about the Blackhawks taking positive steps forward this season.“They’ve got some pieces on that blue line that are really impressive,” Yaremchuk said. “Alex Vlasic’s been good for a while now, that’s not exactly a revelation, but you look at Louis Crevier… he’s a beast on that blue line. I think five of the six d-men they had in the lineup [Thursday] night were under the age of 25. This is a team who I think can look back at this season, Hutts, and be like, ‘You know what, we’re on the right path.’ This fan base should feel confident that even though they playoffs didn’t come this year, they’re coming in the next few years.”
Mark Lazerus asked an important question: who is going to replace Connor Murphy as the Blackhawks’ shutdown defenseman? He asked Murphy and Jason Dickinson about it while in Edmonton, and has some good insights from a couple thoughtful veteran leaders in this piece from The Athletic. This quote from Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill is in line with what we’ve consistently heard from general manager Kyle Davidson: the Blackhawks want each individual player to define their timeline and, now, their ultimate role with the team.“I’m going to let our guys kind of dictate what their ceilings are themselves through their play,” Blashill said. “So I don’t want to say, well, this guy’s going to be in that role, or this guy’s going to be in that role, because until they grab it and do it consistently, that’s hard to say. … We’ll let guys grab those roles as we go through it and see what they do.”
Who will step up to become the Blackhawks' next shutdown defender? My story: t.co/KvQsUdVG9v
— Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) April 4, 2026 After the game last night, Blashill said Wyatt Kaiser has been the Blackhawks’ best defenseman lately — and they want him seeing the toughest matchups moving foward. Good read here from Kalen Lumpkins at the Chicago Tribune on Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro both trying to make a good impression on the coaches and front office down the stretch this season. Both had a really good night in Seattle. Last night was Korchinski’s 100th career NHL game and he picked up an assist on the game-winning goal. After the game, Blashill complimented Korchinski’s recent play:“He’s not over-complicating it. He’s using his feet to beat pressure, then he’s moving the puck to the open people. When he does that and defends with his feet, he’s been a good player.”
Six games remain in the Blackhawks’ 2025-26 season. That means six more chances for Ethan Del Mastro and Kevin Korchinski to impress.“Try to show that coming in next year, I have the ability to contribute to us becoming better.” t.co/ic2V3qwUGJ
— Kalen Lumpkins (@kalenalumpkins) April 4, 2026 We saw the first career goal from Sacha Boisvert — which wound up being the game-winner. He only skated 9:18 in the game and won two of five faceoffs, but this was the most offensively noticeable game from him thus far in his NHL career. He had some good looks and was able to cash one in.#Blackhawks lead 3-1 Sacha Boisvert — 1st career Landon Slaggert, Kevin Korchinski pic.twitter.com/pR7bG8ma0U
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) April 5, 2026 Frank Nazar picked up his 25th assist of the season in his 61st game last night. He had 26 points in 53 NHL games last year. Connor Bedard had two assists last night, giving him 199 career points in 214 games. The fastest Blackhawks to reach 200 career points: Denis Savard (160 games), Jeremy Roenick (194), Steve Larmer (196) and Patrick Kane (215). Thankfully, Nick Lardis was able to stay in the lineup after leaving the game in Edmonton. He’s been playing quite well lately since being moved up into the top six. Ben Pope wrote about his confidence continuing to go up — with his goal total.Nick Lardis' confidence is surging. You can tell on and off the ice. He has four goals in seven games since moving into the Blackhawks' top six."[I’m] finding my stride. I’m feeling really good with the systems and everything."New story: t.co/bwPtMyzUr9
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 4, 2026 Scott Wheeler at The Athletic is in the process of unveiling his rankings of NHL pipelines. He’s up to the top five, and the Blackhawks have not been named yet. We should expect them to be at/near the top. I’ll be interested to see how the positive years from many of the organization’s prospects and young players impacts Wheeler’s thoughts this spring. In June, Wheeler had the Blackhawks at No. 4 behind San Jose, Minnesota and Montreal. In this update, Wheeler had Montreal at No. 9 and Minnesota at No. 23. How about a shootout game winner from Mason West last night?MASON WEST SHOOTOUT GAMEWINNER!!!! pic.twitter.com/tJx2EGnqGs
— Fargo Force (@FargoForce) April 5, 2026 The NHL staff at The Athletic got together and named the the prospects in each pipeline who had the most promising 2025-26 season. Scott Powers got the duties for the Chicago Blackhawks, and he (not surprisingly) called out Roman Kantserov. Here’s what he wrote:The Blackhawks thought Kantserov could be a value pick at No. 44 in the 2023 draft, but they had no idea he’d develop as he has in Russia. Kantserov became the first 21-year-old since Kirill Kaprizov to lead the KHL in goals. Kantserov scored 36 goals in 63 games this season. That’s not to say he will be the next Kaprizov in the NHL, but the Blackhawks think he has the makings of another top-six forward for them and another significant piece to their rebuild puzzle.
We got the one schedule for the second round of the OHL playoffs on Saturday. AJ Spellacy and Windsor will start their series at home against Flint on Friday night. Jack Pridham and Kitchener will face Sault Ste. Marie. And Marek Vanacker, Parker Holmes and Brantford were waiting for one of the two undecided series to conclude to know their opponent. Congratulations to the Buffalo Sabres — and, most importantly, their fans — for ending their playoff drought. I can’t wait to see playoff hockey in Buffalo! With the Red Wings’ regulation loss on Saturday, the Sabres are officially in for the first time in 14 years. This thing of ours is forever, Buffalo. pic.twitter.com/pUzOX32ake
— x – Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) April 4, 2026 Finally, on a non-hockey note, on Friday a young man appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” on ESPN to announce his college football commitment. My son plays football at Montini with Izzy and he’s a terrific leader who is a great example of hard work paying off. He’s a humble kid who does the little things and makes those around him better. I love his family and the kid’s going to be an absolute star at the U. Congrats, Izzy!4-star QB recruit Israel Abrams announced he'll be committing to the University of Miami on the @PatMcAfeeShow pic.twitter.com/tnFi8JfGas
