As we’ve discussed, this offseason/early-season has been rife with significant extensions, including two this week for players who have barely even played at Triple-A. It’s easy to forget how rare that is when two happen in quick succession like Cooper Pratt and Colt Emerson.

“The two sides have been talking since early in spring training, sources told ESPN, and the Pirates’ proposals are closer in range to the eight-year, $111 million deal that Corbin Carroll signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the spring of 2023. Griffin’s side, however, has been angling for something closer to Roman Anthony’s eight-year, $130 million deal that was forged with the Boston Red Sox in August, sources said.”
Let’s just say, either one of those deals is likely to be an enormous potential win for the Pirates, especially if they get option years tacked on. It would be the deal they couldn’t get done with Paul Skenes (and probably won’t), and it could have beneficial ramifications for the organization for a long time.
Griffin is currently at Triple-A after some talk this spring about whether he’d make the Opening Day roster. If the Pirates bring him up soon, Griffin would still be eligible for the Prospect Promotion Incentive (essentially has to come up within the first 20 days of the season), and I tentatively expect that’s what would happen as soon as a deal gets inked.
