ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bishop John Bonnici is set to celebrate his first Easter Mass in Rochester this Sunday.
The Catholic Diocese of Rochester welcomed Bishop Bonnici at an installation Mass earlier this month. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with him about his ministry and this role.
“This is the first time I actually am the celebrant, so it’ll be a very unique and beautiful experience,” Bonnici said.
Bishop Bonnici moved to Rochester from New York City 12 days ago. He met the congregation when he celebrated Mass with former Bishop Salvatore Matano earlier this month. He’s since received a ton of mail congratulating and welcoming him.
“I’ve encountered so many in the last 12 days who have said to me, you know, ‘I want to learn more. I want to discover more. I want something that actually lasts.’ And I think that’s what we have to do at Easter and every day forward is just celebrate the good news and help people embrace it and enjoy it,” Bonnici said.
Bishop Bonnici mentioned spreading this news is especially important right now when it feels like the world isn’t in harmony. He pointed to the constant stream of troubling headlines and uncertainty affecting people of all ages.
“There’s a lot going on. Every time I turn on the news. Forgive me. It’s all bad, you know. There’s a lot of uncertainty right now. There’s anxiety, you know, among all ages, including young people and young adults. And in the midst of all this craziness, you know there is something that can remedy — there is an antidote and that is believing in something or someone other than ourselves,” Bonnici said.
The bishop’s spoken before about the “four L’s,” when it comes to his ministry, referencing a promise to listen, to learn, to love and to live fully in Jesus. He says he received the four L’s from a mission helper growing up. “She was a force to be reckoned with. And she wanted us children to learn how to live at the center of the world while remaining centered in Jesus,” he said.
Bishop Bonnici says Holy Week continues with the Chrism Mass at 6 p.m. There will be three Masses on Easter Sunday at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
