MARCY, N.Y. — The fate of a former Mid-State corrections officer is in the hands of a jury.

Jonah Levi is charged with the murder, manslaughter and gang assault of Messiah Nantwi. Nantwi died while in custody last March at Mid-State Correctional in Marcy.

Body camera video from that day was shared in the Oneida County courtroom Monday, alongside photos from Nantwi’s autopsy. News10NBC learned Nantwi suffered 69 injuries, including 15 kicks to the head.

The defense says Nantwi was high on drugs and holding a pencil as a weapon. The defense says Levi wasn’t even in the room when the beating happened.

Prosecutors say Levi kicked Nantwi in the head up to six times.

The defense says Nantwi died from a fall that happened in the prison’s medical bay. Prosecutors argue the guards threw him to the floor.

Four other officers implicated in Nantwi’s death have trial dates set for May and June. Jury deliberations for Levi continue Tuesday morning, March 31, at 10 a.m.
