ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The second half of last year it seemed we were talking about our drought status every day. With all the snow we had this winter now melted and above average rainfall, not only is our drought over, but we now must turn our attention to the potential for flooding.

A stationary front will set up over our region Tuesday, bringing warmth and moisture, as well as heavy rain and storms. Rain continues into Wednesday morning, then we have more heavy rain in the forecast for Friday into the weekend.

There is a marginal threat for flooding stretching from Illinois up to Quebec City on Tuesday, and an even bigger threat all the way from Louisiana to Quebec on Friday.

This comes as no surprise to our area as we have nearly double the amount of rain this month than we usually get. Two kinds of flooding are possible from this rain and it’s important to know the difference between the two.

The first is your normal flood; this happens due to prolonged rain events and takes hours or days to develop. Due to its more gradual nature, we have more warning time to prepare.

The second kind of flood is a flash flood. As the name suggests, flash floods develop much more quickly — often on the scale of minutes to hours. This is caused by sudden heavy rain in poor drainage or flood prone areas and there is much less warning time.

If you receive a flood or flash flood warning this week, it’s important to seek higher ground, avoid driving through flooded roadways, stay informed, and if told to evacuate, make sure to do so.

And although the threat for flooding this week is only marginal, the threat is still there. Make sure to keep checking the forecast this week so that you know what to expect, and stay safe!
