Good morning, Bleacher Nation. What an enjoyable 10-2 win from the Cubs yesterday!
So many positives in that game, and as a result, we get to watch the club go for its first series win of the season today at 1:20 with Shota Imanaga on the mound.
Along with several positives on Saturday with the big league Cubs, the Iowa Cubs had some of their own, despite suffering their first loss of the season. Oh, and ABS continues to create more drama with every passing day of the season, so plenty to get to in the bullets.
Yes, there were a lot of positives in Saturday’s win, but Cade Horton was the unquestionable headline. Encouraging data aside, the way he relentlessly attacks the strike zone, works quickly, and has refined and added to his repertoire of pitches is a pleasure to watch (Ian Happ agrees (starts at 14:22 mark)). Horton threw 53 of his 75 pitches for strikes, got 10 groundballs, and had the confidence of his manager to go back out for the 7th inning in his first start of the season. Fair to say he’s been pitching like the Ace of the staff since the middle of 2025.His four-seamer was already such a great cut-ride pitch. If he IMPROVES it? Hummina hummina. t.co/kXUxV0kp0i
— Brett Taylor (@Brett_A_Taylor) March 29, 2026 Miguel Amaya and Ian Happ provided the power yesterday, hitting home runs in the 4th and 6th innings, respectively. Amaya finished 2-for-4, caught a great game (Cade Horton agrees (starts at 6:07)), and continues to show the potential to be a difference-making catcher both with the bat and behind the plate. Thinking longer term about Amaya continuing to realize his potential, should he stay healthy, it’s interesting to wonder what that’ll provoke from Craig Counsell’s lineup decisions. I know I’d have Amaya back in the lineup today, playing the “hot hand,” but Counsell has all the data that could very well suggest Carson Kelly is the right guy today. Kelly had a great 2025, so how impactful will Amaya need to be for how long before he begins to “steal/earn” starts in favor of Kelly? Cart before the horse talk, yes, but worth putting a bookmark in, nonetheless.Miguel Amaya CRUSHES the first homer of the season for the Cubs ? pic.twitter.com/AYOT2vX9oz
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) March 28, 2026 The Cubs stellar defense also showed up in yesterday’s win. Each of Alex Bregman, Nico Hoerner, Michael Busch, and Dansby Swanson had impressive plays in the infield. Ian Happ, overcoming a tough sky and wind in left field, shouldn’t go overlooked, either. When it comes to a winner of the defensive gems, though, Dansby gets the nod.Dansby Swanson makes it look easy ?? pic.twitter.com/WgKWvYYpWn
— MLB (@MLB) March 28, 2026 The Iowa Cubs dropped game two of their three-game season-opening home series to Columbus yesterday, 4-3. Despite the loss, the I-Cubs pitching staff continued its strikeout prowess, having totaled 28 K’s in their 18 innings of work. Will Sanders got the start and finished with a line of 3.2IP, 5H, 1ER, 1BB, 6K. Luke Little worked out of a jam in the top of the fourth, but did walk two batters in the inning and a third he pitched, and Ethan Roberts struck out three in his two innings of relief.Back to the dugout.#iowacubs #iowaaa #cubs #milb #strikeout pic.twitter.com/Cr9F1MV0a2
— Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) March 29, 2026 Kevin Alcantara hit his first home run of the season in the I-Cubs loss Saturday, launching a breaking ball 393 feet at 104.3mph. Alcantara’s struggles with off-speed pitches, particularly breaking balls away, have been much-discussed, so if he’s able to turn that corner at all in 2026, he’ll be beating down the door for a call-up sooner than later.Kevin Alcántara homers off a slider for Iowa pic.twitter.com/LRc3IqFQzF
— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) March 28, 2026 While there wasn’t any notable ABS drama in Saturday’s Cubs-Nationals game, there was in Cincinnati, where the Reds outlasted the Red Sox, 6-5, in 11 innings. C.B. Bucknor was behind the plate in this game, and the Reds won their first five challenges, while Boston suffered late in the game, having lost their challenges before the 8th inning.C.B.
