LOS ANGELES — The Arizona Diamondbacks are 0-3 after a pair of frustrating, one-run losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers to end their opening series at Chavez Ravine.
This is the fifth time Arizona has started a season on at least a three-game losing streak and the first since 2021. That season went off the rails to the tune of 110 losses.
Not all examples of Arizona starting the season 0-3 have unfolded in the same way.
The D-backs were 0-5 in 1998, their inaugural season that ended with a 65-97 record. They went 0-3 in 2014 and finished with 64 wins.
But in 1999, Arizona opened the year 0-4 before winning 100 games and capturing the National League West.
The Diamondbacks had their chances over the past two games in Los Angeles. Opening Day got away, 8-2, but the D-backs were tied with or leading L.A. entering the eighth inning of the next two games before taking on crushing blows late.
The Dodgers became the seventh team in the last 125 years to win their first three games despite trailing by multiple runs, according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs.
“I just feel like we have a really good battle. We end up losing all three games, but I feel like the last two games, we have a really good battle and that’s something we’ve got to take. Sometimes you’ve got to take the good and the bad, and we lost two games when we had a chance to win it,” pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez said.
“I did not think we would be coming home 0-3, but we are,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “We’ve got to understand why it happened, accept why it happened, get better and get ready for a very spirited Monday, Opening Day.”

The Diamondbacks return home Monday to open a seven-game homestand against the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves, both of which are talented teams off to good starts (4-1 combined) but not the Dodgers.
L.A. has the most star-studded roster in the league, one that has greatly improved from its back-to-back world championship squads with the additions of Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz.
That said, the early-season schedule remains difficult, and the Diamondbacks are going to have to survive it to have a better chance of going on a run later.
“We’re going to play these teams at some point in time during the year,” Lovullo said. “You can pile them all up at the beginning like we have, or it can be spread out. It doesn’t matter. They’re all major league teams, and there’s a lot of parity in this league. So, I don’t think there’s anybody that you can expect to walk through. That’s what makes this game so great.”
What happened to the other 0-3 Diamondbacks teams?
The 1998 debut squad got swept by the Colorado Rockies to open the year and started 2-12. It never got out of last place in the NL West after the opening weeks.
The 1999 D-backs were swept at Dodger Stadium with back-to-back walk-off losses out of the gate, but they got back to .500 at 7-7 and never dipped below it. An 18-10 May vaulted the Diamondbacks into first place.
In 2014, the D-backs started with two games in Australia against the Dodgers, both losses, so the start of the season was a bit unique. They opened the year 1-7, however, spending most of it in fourth or fifth place in the division.
The 2021 team actually got on track in April (14-12) after an opening series sweep by the San Diego Padres before the wheels came off in May and June (8-48).
There are recent examples of teams starting with losing streaks and making the playoffs. The Houston Astros were 0-4 and the New York Mets were 0-5 in 2024 and reached October baseball. The 2021 Atlanta Braves started 0-4 and won the World Series.
Starting with the Dodgers showed the Diamondbacks what has to get cleaned up early on, namely outs on the bases, late-game offense and a walks from their pitchers.
