Sawyer Jones is transferring to Saint Mary’s College of California to continue his academic and athletic career after beginning his undergraduate career at Colorado School of Mines. Jones has three eligibility years remaining.
Saint Mary’s men’s and women’s swimming programs will make their debut in the 2026-2027 academic year alongside men’s and women’s water polo. Currently well known for basketball, the school announced the launch of the four new teams back in September of 2025.
Jones made his collegiate debut with the Colorado Mines as a freshman during the 2024-2025 season, where he primarily specialized in sprint free and fly. He turned in a strong showing at the 2025 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, racking up 28 points to help the team to a runner-up finish overall. Jones placed 7th in the 50 free (20.47 – PB) and 100 free (45.44 – PB) and 13th in the 200 free (1:42.36) after posting a time of 1:41.87 during prelims. His altitude adjusted times in those events were 45.34 in the 100 free and 1:41.16 in the 200 free, with a best time of 1:40.67 during prelims. He also helped the Mines to silver medals in the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
Jones did not compete for Colorado School of Mines this past season and was instead training with Diablo Aquatics in Danville, California. He posted a series of top performances at the Speedo Sectionals in Walnut in December, logging three new personal best times. He placed 4th in the 50 free (20.45), 8th in the 100 free (45.04) and 19th in the 50 fly (22.64), posting lifetime bests in each event. He also contested the 200 free (1:44.35) and 100 fly (53.36).
At the 2026 Oceanside Sectionals in February, Jones delivered another string of strong performances. He placed 5th in the 100 free (44.81 – PB), 6th in the 50 free (20.65), 20th in the 50 fly (22.75) and 64th in the 100 fly (51.72). He also contested the 50 back (24.35 – PB) and 200 free (1:41.28 – SB) and logged a personal best time in the 50 free (20.34) during a time trial.

The team will be helmed by men’s and women’s head coach Ellie Monobe, who led the Pepperdine women to a MPSF championship title in 2025.
Based on the results from the 2026 MPSF Championships a few weeks ago, Jones would have landed in the ‘B’ final in the 50 free and 100 free and the ‘C’ final in the 200 free and 100 fly, putting him in a position to be a valuable contributor right from the start.
Currently set to join Jones in the pool this fall are Ilija Sosic, Tobin Reed, Olivier Petre, Lucas Tompkins and Giorgio Sportaro, who should all make for strong training partners during their time together.
