Former University of Alabama President Stuart R. Bell will chair United Way of West Alabama’s 2026 campaign during its 80th anniversary year.
Bell, who served as the University’s 29th president from 2015-25, will help lead the fundraising effort ahead of United Way’s Aug. 11 kickoff luncheon at the Bryant Conference Center. Over that decade, the University logged record enrollment and research activity, and its Rising Tide capital campaign produced more than 1,100 endowed scholarships and nearly 70 endowed faculty support funds.
Bell and his wife, Susan, have supported United Way for years, including before moving to Tuscaloosa, the release said. Since arriving at the University, they also helped strengthen the university’s annual campaign.
“Susan and I have been champions of United Way for many years, and I am honored to lead this year’s campaign at a pivotal and important moment when so many organizations are dependent on these funds to provide critical services,” he said. “With the growing needs in our community, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to meet our goal this year.”
Jackie Wuska Wear, president and CEO of United Way, said Bell’s standing in the community and fundraising record made him a strong fit to guide this year’s effort.
“He has a proven history of building strong fundraising foundations and surpassing large goals and we look forward to learning from him as he guides our campaign,” she said.
