In his posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, late actor Eric Dane details an early ALS symptom he tried to ignore before his diagnosis.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Grey’s Anatomy actor was eating with his children when he noticed he was having a hard time with his utensils.
“I’m eating sushi with my kids and suddenly I can’t work the chopsticks with my right hand,” he said in an excerpt of his memoir obtained by People. “And then my fingers feel numb.”
Dane initially tried to “shake it off,” assuming that the numbness he was feeling was because he was “probably texting too much,” but the sensation persisted.
“Three weeks later, it happens again, only worse,” Dane recalled in the book. “I can’t grip the chopsticks at all.”
After months of searching for answers, Dane reached out to San Francisco neurologist Dr. Mark Terrelonge. The late actor recalled Dr. Terrelonge contacted him immediately after their meeting to confirm his ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, diagnosis.
“I don’t remember a single word I said after that,” the actor wrote. “I remember only feeling a violent impact, like getting the wind knocked out of me, and Rebecca wailing on the other end of the phone, and then I really lose it, and my sobs make my body shudder, and I hear her words pouring out amid her tears, ‘I’m here, we’ll fight this together, I’m not going anywhere.’”
Dane announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he told People at the time. Dane added that he planned to keep working and was “looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week.”
“I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time,” he said.
My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments releases on Nov. 3.
