Wolff warns Antonelli: One win means nothing without more ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

As Mercedes descends upon Suzuka for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, team boss Toto Wolff is making one thing clear: Kimi Antonelli’s historic maiden victory in China last time out was a beginning, not a destination.

The 19-year-old’s triumph in Shanghai marked a historic milestone – making him the second-youngest winner in Formula 1 history – and instantly thrust the young Italian into the spotlight.

Yet Wolff is deliberately tempering expectations, reminding both driver and team that early success can be as deceptive as it is exhilarating.

A strong start… and a few close calls

Mercedes may lead the narrative after two races, but Wolff is quick to point out how easily things could have unraveled in the first two races of the season.

“We have made a positive start to the season but it is only that,” Wolff said. “In both Australia and China, we had several close calls that could have ended our weekend.

“These cars are new and fragile; we were fortunate that none of the issues we faced severely compromised our results. We have work to do to make sure that continues to be the case.”

That caution reflects a broader reality in the 2026 season: a grid still grappling with new machinery, evolving setups, and razor-thin margins.

Mercedes may sit in a strong position, but reliability concerns and rapid development across rival teams mean nothing is guaranteed.

“The grid is also learning so much every time we take to the track,” he added.

“Each weekend brings a new set of challenges and we are focused on completing our work, and looking to improve. We know that the moment you think you've got this sport figured out, you are usually proven wrong.”

Antonelli’s next test: consistency

For Antonelli, the real challenge begins now. His Shanghai triumph was a breakthrough – but also a reset. With just four points separating him from teammate George Russell in the standings, the internal battle is already intense.

Wolff’s message to his young star is clear: don’t dwell on what’s been achieved – focus on what comes next.

“That is as true for Kimi as it is for the team. His win in China was a great achievement and a moment to be proud of,” the Mercedes chief explained.

“However, his focus and ours are on what is ahead. His first victory is a first step and all that matters is how he builds on it. We will support him to navigate the expectations that come with performing at the front more consistently.”

That emphasis on consistency is key. Winning once proves potential; repeating it proves pedigree.

‘This is only the beginning’

Antonelli himself has acknowledged the journey ahead. In the immediate aftermath of his win, he reflected on his development and the faith Mercedes placed in him as a junior – faith that is now being tested at the very highest level.

That sentiment was echoed powerfully by driver development advisor Gwen Lagrue, who framed the victory not as a culmination, but as a starting point.

“We were bold when we promoted you,” Lagrue wrote on the Mercedes team’s website. “You were young but we were brave as one. And that doesn’t stop here. This is only the beginning.

“We will keep pushing you. You will keep pushing yourself. And together, we’ll keep moving forward.

“Whatever happens next, no one can take this away from you: You are a Formula 1 Grand Prix winner.

“Part of the history of this sport. Part of the history of this team. Enjoy it and then let’s get back to work! Because every single one of us is chasing the same dream. And we only get there together.”

Shanghai may have announced Kimi Antonelli to the world. But Suzuka and the races beyond will determine whether he can truly stay there.
