‘Finally, we’re seeing the results’: Antonelli’s pole vindicates Mercedes ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Kimi Antonelli’s return to the top of Formula 1’s qualifying order was more than a perfectly timed lap in Saturday’s blustery Texas conditions.

For the championship leader, pole position at the United States Grand Prix represented something Mercedes has been chasing for weeks: tangible proof that its ambitious W17 upgrade is finally delivering on its promise.

The young Italian upset the expected script at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to pole while Isack Hadjar completed an encouraging third-place result for the Milton Keynes outfit.

Antonelli’s breakthrough was particularly satisfying given the difficulties Mercedes initially encountered with its comprehensive Malaysia upgrade.

Although the package brought additional performance, it also made the W17 more demanding to set up, leaving the team with plenty of work to understand how best to exploit its potential.

That painstaking process is now beginning to pay dividends.

Mercedes finally unlocks its upgrade

Mercedes did not immediately hit the ground running in Austin. The opening practice session suggested that the team still had ground to make up in finding the right balance, but incremental improvements gradually brought the car into contention.

A revised front wing, previously trialled during practice in Singapore, formed part of the effort to refine the package further.

By qualifying, Antonelli had a car capable of fighting at the sharp end, and he made the most of the opportunity when it mattered.

"I'm happy because we've been working really hard on this package, and we're still trying to understand it fully," said the young Italian after the grid defining session.

"Since Singapore, we've taken a big step further, and now we've just got to keep working on it, keep understanding. But it's a good result for the team because they've done a tremendous job on bringing this package. Finally, we're seeing the results.

"It was surprising, but also one of the biggest achievements for me today is that I didn't do track limits!

"That also made our life a little bit easier. I didn't put myself in a difficult situation, and we were able to just progress throughout the session and build from there."

That last observation brought a welcome touch of humour to an otherwise significant achievement.

With gusts intensifying through Q3, securing a clean opening run proved crucial, allowing Antonelli to establish his position without having to recover from a costly mistake.

More importantly for Mercedes, the result offered encouragement that the team’s recent development work is translating into performance rather than simply adding complexity to an already temperamental car.

Championship opportunity adds extra spice

Antonelli’s pole position also puts him in a position to entertain the possibility of clinching his maiden world championship as early as Sunday, although the mathematics remain demanding.

The 20-year-old would need to win the race, with Mercedes team-mate George Russell finishing ninth or lower and Hamilton no higher than fifth. With Russell starting sixth and Hamilton fifth, that combination is possible, but far from assured.

Antonelli, however, is keeping his attention firmly on the task in front of him rather than allowing the championship permutations to become a distraction.

"I'm just going to try to do the best race I can. I'm going to try to win, and then we'll see what happens," said the 20-year-old.

"It does feel a little bit different, but the goal stays the same. I just need to keep doing my job, and actually, I feel like I can enjoy the driving and everything more because I'm in a very good position.

“But still, the mindset is always the same."
