SwimSwam Pulse is a recurring feature tracking and analyzing the results of our periodic A3 Performance Polls. You can cast your vote in our newest poll on the SwimSwam homepage, about halfway down the page on the right side.

Our most recent poll asked SwimSwam readers which race they’re most excited for this week in Atlanta:

Question: Which event are you looking forward to most at Men’s NCAAs?

RESULTS

*% of votes in early poll release prior to Urlando withdrawal in brackets

100 fly – 22.4% (26.9%) 1650 free – 15.4% (11.5%) 200 free – 15.1% (7.1%) 100 back – 14.0% (17.6%) 500 free – 8.4% (8.8%) 100 free – 8.1% (9.3%) 50 free – 7.3% (3.3%) 200 fly – 2.6% (4.9%) 100 breast – 2.0% (2.7%) 400 IM – 1.7% (3.8%) 200 breast – 1.5% (1.0%) 200 back – 1.2% (2.2%) 200 IM – 0.3% (0.5%)

The withdrawal of Luca Urlando from the Men’s NCAA Championships changed the landscape of three individual events on the program, which is why we reset the poll following the news last week.

In the initial poll, the 100 fly led the way, with 26.9% of readers voting it as the event they were most looking forward to at Men’s NCAAs, with another Urlando, event, the 100 back, ranking 2nd with 17.6% of votes.

After Urlando scratched out of the meet due to what he described as a minor injury, we reset the poll, but still, the 100 fly came out on top.

A slightly smaller percentage, 22.4%, voted for the 100 fly the second time around, indicating that a small portion of people moved away from the event with Urlando no longer in the mix.

The 100 fly projects to be a showdown between Florida senior Josh Liendo, the two-time defending champion and short course meter world record holder, and Arizona State junior Ilya Kharun, last year’s runner-up to Liendo who also ranks 2nd in the nation this season.

Urlando was 3rd last year and was expected to be in a battle to finish in the same spot this year, though 2nd wasn’t out of the question after he nearly edged out Kharun last year. Urlando has been 43.87 this season, while two other men, Michigan’s Tyler Ray and Tennessee’s Gui Caribe, have also been under 44 seconds. Virginia freshman Thomas Heilman is another contender for a top finish, owning a personal best of 43.86.

The next-most votes went to the 1650 free (15.4%), with the 200 free (15.1%) close behind.

Tonight’s fastest-seeded heat of the 1650 promises to be exciting, with defending champion and top seed Zalan Sarkany joined by reigning 1500 free world champion Ahmed Jaouadi and 2023 world champion Ahmed Hafnaoui.

Indiana’s Sarkany won the 2025 NCAA title in a time of 14:21.29, and owns the fastest time this season at 14:23.85. Jaouadi is a close 2nd this season in 14:25.14, and after winning the short course world title in 2024 and the long course world title last summer, we have to expect he’s got something significantly faster in store than what he went at the SEC Championships.

Jaouadi’s Florida teammate and Tunisian countryman Hafnaoui is more of an unknown after a quiet few years, most recently coming off serving a suspension for whereabouts failures. He’s shown he’s capable of being the best in the world, having won Olympic gold in the 400 free in 2021 before sweeping the 800 and 1500 at the 2023 World Championships, but what type of form he shows up in Atlanta on is an unknown.

Hafnaoui did have a respectable showing last month at SECs, clocking 14:30.74 in his first career 1650, less than two months into his Florida career.

The 200 free is the most wide-open event on the program, with only two returning ‘A’ finalists and a total of just four swimmers in this year’s field who earned a second swim last year: Tomas Koski, Henry McFadden, Alex Painter and Tomas Navikonis.

The event is the biggest toss-up according to our Pick ’em contest selections, with McFadden the narrow favorite over NC State’s Kaii Winkler.

The 100 back finished 4th in the poll after it was reset, with an exciting battle set to go down with Hubert Kos coming in as the defending champion after earning a narrow victory over Jonny Marshall last season. Both men will be back this year, as will Kos’ Texas teammate Will Modglin, who set a new American Record of 43.26 earlier this season to rank #3 all-time behind Kos (43.20) and Marshall (43.22).

Urlando, who set the NCAA, American and U.S. Open Record of 43.35 in surprising fashion at the 2022 NCAAs leading off Georgia’s 400 medley relay, was going to be an interesting addition to the 100 back for the first time individually at NCAAs before his scratch.

Below, vote in our new A3 Performance Poll, which asks: Which individual performance from a first-year swimmer stood out the most at Women’s NCAAs?
