Nick Lardis Taking Advantage of Latest Opportunity, Creating Offense for the Blackhawks ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Blackhawks fans have been begging to see Nick Lardis elevated in the lineup all year, and that he has finally been given that opportunity over the past two games. Skating primarily on a line with Frank Nazar and Tyler Bertuzzi, Lardis has put together his best two games in the NHL.

In Tuesday night’s win against the Islanders, Lardis posted his first career multi-point game. He scored once and added two assists. Nazar scored and had an assist. Bertuzzi scored and had an assist. That line was easily the Blackhawks’ best.

The shot attempts for the game at 5-on-5 favored the Islanders in a big way (83-44). In the 10:31 Lardis-Nazar-Bertuzzi were on the ice together at even strength, the Blackhawks had a 17-14 shot attempt advantage. They also had a 9-7 shots on net advantage.

After the game, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill praised Lardis once again. After calling Sunday afternoon his best game in the NHL, Blashill said Tuesday night was probably even better. Building on strong performances is what coaches — and fans — want to see from young players. And Lardis is doing that with this opportunity in the top six.

To date, Lardis has spent 26:40 on the ice at 5-on-5 with Nazar and Bertuzzi (in 16 games with all three in the lineup). During that time, Natural Stat Trick indicates the Blackhawks have a 52.81 expected goals for percentage — which is eight percent better than Nazar with Bertuzzi but not Lardis (44.68 in a significantly larger sample size (396:55)).

Lardis now has seven goals in 30 NHL games to start his career, but has scored in each of the last two games in which he’s skated primarily with Nazar and Bertuzzi.

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Nazar and Bertuzzi has been a perfect landing spot for Lardis. Bertuzzi has been arguably the Blackhawks’ most consistent player all year; every line he’s been on this season has performed well. He plays a more physical game and wins pucks in dirty areas. He also creates traffic around the net, which is ideal with players like Lardis and Nazar who can create rebound opportunities and take advantage of screens.

With Anton Frondell now riding shotgun with Connor Bedard on the top line, the Blackhawks have an opportunity to give Lardis a long look in this role to evaluate for the future. So far, he’s taking advantage of the elevated role. And that gives the Blackhawks food for thought as they continue adding talented, productive young players to the lineup.
