Case Western Reserve University senior William Froass has won the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award for the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship.
The award, first presented during the 2009-10 academic year, is given annually to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average who competes at the respective NCAA Championships in the sport. Eligibility requires that athletes must have been a member of their team for at least two years and be an active participant at the championship competition.
Froass is the 12th Case Western student-athlete to earn the honor and the second from the men’s swimming and diving program, joining Drew Hamilton, who claimed it in 2018.
Froass majors in electrical engineering and currently holds a 4.o cumulative grade point average.
In his first-ever NCAA Championships appearance this week, Froass helped Case Western finish 19th in the 400 freestyle relay, contributing a 45.90 split on the third leg as the Spartans combined for a time of 3:01.06. The Spartans finished 33rd out of 46 scorers in the overall team standings.
Last month, Froass was part of the squad that set a school record of 2:58.67 in the event at the Spartan Invite. As a sophomore, he was also part of the 200 medley relay team that set the school record of 1:29.64, which still stands.
A three-time University Athletic Association All-Academic honoree, Froass has also been inducted into the CWRU Van Horn Society twice, an honor reserved for juniors and seniors who carry a cumulative GPA above 3.8.
