101st JAPAN SWIM

Thursday, March 19th – Sunday, March 22nd Tokyo Aquatics Center LCM (50m) Meet Central SwimSwam Preview Day 1 Recap/Day 2 Recap/Day 3 Recap Live Results

The 101st Japan Swim is officially complete but not before additional records bit the dust at the Tokyo Aquatics Center. In the hopes of qualifying for this year’s Pan Pacific Championships and Asian Games, the Japanese men and women showed up in full force.

We reported how Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita and 17-year-old Yumeki Kojima did some major damage in the men’s 400m IM.

The former ripped a lifetime best of 4:06.83 to take the gold while Kojima rocked a PB of 4:08.84 to establish a new World Junior Record. You can read about their feats here.

Then we saw two national records get erased, as Kaito Tabuchi notched a new benchmark of 14:45.57 in the 1500m free and Ichika Kojimoto registered 8:23.11 to overtake the longest-standing Japanese women’s national record.

Three-time Olympian Rikako Ikee grabbed another piece of hardware, following up her 50m fly victory from last night with a win in the 50m free.

The 25-year-old struck gold in 24.89, the sole performance of the field under the 25-second barrier.

Yume Jinno was next to the wall in 25.22 as Ai Soma delivered a result of 25.29.

The women were chasing a minimum mark of 24.39, the qualification standard set by the Japan Swimming Federation (JASF) for selection to the aforementioned elite international competitions.

Two men cleared the 22-second threshold in the men’s edition of the 50m freestyle, with national record holder Shuya Matsumoto topping the event with a time of 21.89.

That held a narrow advantage over Koshiro Sakai who was relegated to silver a fingernail behind in 21.92 and veteran Katsumi Nakamura hit 22.09 to round out the podium.

Matusmoto has been as fast as 21.64 in his career, the national standard he put on the books at a domestic meet last July. That same time represented the qualification standard the men were hoping to meet in tonight’s final.

Reo Miura was nearly too quick to catch in the men’s 50m back, clocking a result of 25.13. However, Riku Matsuyama wound up touching simultaneously to have the men become co-champions in the sprint.

Naoya Shiota bagged the bronze in 25.15, although the 18-year-old did establish a new Japanese National High School Record with his performance.

His time easily surpassed the 25.43 Yusuke Sato notched two years ago.

35-year-old Olympic medalist Satomi Suzuki was the top performer in the women’s 50m breast, putting up a solid swim of 30.32.

That held a healthy advantage over two-time 2024 Junior Pan Pacs champion Kotomi Kato who touched in 31.09. Yuyumi Obatake placed 3rd in 31.50.

Suzuki now ranks 4th in the world on the season.

2024 World Championships silver medalist Mio Narita earned the victory in the women’s 400m IM, turning in a time of 4:35.93 to beat the pack by nearly 2 seconds.

Waka Kobori was tonight’s silver medalist in 4:37.83 and Ayami Suzuki captured bronze in 4:40.12.

Last year in Singapore, Narita notched a time of 4:33.26 to share runner-up honors with Australia’s Jenna Forrester behind Canadian Olympic multi-gold medalist Summer McIntosh (4:25.78). The teen’s performance there rendered her Japan’s #2 performer of all time, sitting only behind retired Olympic double gold medalist Yui Ohashi (4:30.82, 2018).

Not only does Narita now represent the world’s 8th-fastest female at the moment but her time cleared the selection standard needed for this year’s championship meets.

Finally, the men’s 100n fly saw a trio of competitors fight to the finish, with the podium separated by only .05 when all was said and done.

Shoon Mitsunaga, who already tied the Japanese national record in the 50m fly earlier in the meet, got it done for gold in 51.32, a new lifetime best by just under half a second.

Katsuhiro Matsumoto secured silver in 51.35, not incredibly far off his PB of 50.96, while So Ogata was 3rd in 51.37.

The men needed at least 50.88 in order to make the grade for the key competitions this year, however.
