2026 GIANT OPEN
March 20th – March 22nd Olympic Aquatic Center, Saint-Denis, France LCM (50m) SwimSwam Preview #1 SwimSwam Preview #2 Entries Day 1 Recap Live ResultsIt was a record-breaking night at the 2026 Giant Open in France, with a total of nine meet benchmarks biting the dust when all was said and done.
Dutch Olympian and world champion Marrit Steenbergen was responsible for two of them, with the 26-year-old doubling up on gold first in the women’s 50m backstroke and then in the 100m freestyle.
In the former event, Steenbergen ripped a time of 27.62 to beat the pack and establish a new lifetime best.
Entering this competition, versatile Steenbergen’s career-swiftest performance checked in at the 28.22 she notched in Stockholm nearly a year ago. Flash forward to tonight, however, and she obliterated that previous effort, clearing the 28-second barrier for her first time ever.
Host nation swimmer Analia Pigree picked up silver in 27.80 while Steenbergen’s teammate Maaike de Waard captured bronze in 27.87.
Steenbergen’s time ranks her 7th in the world at the moment, impressive considering most would call this an ‘off’ event for her.

Greek national record holder Anna Ntountounaki turned in a time of 26.05 as the silver medalist and Marie Wattel of France also landed on the podium in 26.31 for bronze.
Köhler’s performance fell just .02 shy of her lifetime best, a result of 25.55 she nabbed for 4th place at the 2025 World Championships. She now ranks 4th in the world in this event.

Following up on her 100m breast victory from night one, Evans stopped the clock at 2:22.02 to handily hold the advantage over her peers.
The next to touch was Irish athlete Ellie McCartney who posted 2:24.51. Well behind her was France’s Zia Dupont who hit 2:28.56.
Evans’ result here overtakes her previous season-best of 2:22.31 produced at last month’s Edinburgh International Meet. That represented the 2nd-best time of her career, positioned only behind the 2:21.86 she turned in at the 2025 World Championships. With the Commonwealth Games and European Championships on the horizon this summer, Evans now ranks as the 2nd-best performer in the world at the moment.

That kept a pair of Greek swimmers at bay, with Apostolos Siskos settling for silver in 1:56.79 and Apostolos Christou, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in this event, rounded out the podium in 1:57.08.
Ironically, Shortt did not break the Giant Open record but his performance did check in as a new Irish national record. His feat tonight overtook his previous PB of 1:56.19 from Otopeni.
