Charges are pending in connection to the fire that led to the death of 32-year-old Chicago firefighter Michael Altman, authorities said Friday.
Authorities did not yet name the person who the pending charges are against; however, a person of interest was questioned by police on Wednesday in connection to the fire.
NBC Chicago is not naming the man that was questioned because he was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for a crime unrelated to the fire and it was not immediately confirmed that he is the person who the pending charges were filed against.
An internal Chicago Police Department bulletin dated March 17, 2026, that was obtained by NBC Chicago on Wednesday stated police were looking for the man to question him in relation to the fire that occurred around noon on Monday on North Shore Avenue near North Ravenswood Avenue in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.
Altman fell through a burning floor in the building while he was battling the blaze. He was rescued from the basement that was engulfed in flames and rushed to a local hospital where he later died, authorities said. He leaves behind a young child and his wife, with whom he was expecting a second child.
