While speaking on a panel at Thats4Entertainment’s 90s Con on Saturday, The Nanny actor Daniel Davis opened up about the celebrity guest stars on the 1990s ABC comedy and revealed which one was “the biggest” diva.
According to People, Davis recalled Elizabeth Taylor’s many requests during her February 1996 appearance on the show. Her cameo was part of a larger campaign to promote her newest fragrance, Black Pearls, which saw Taylor appear in all four of CBS’ sitcoms airing during its Monday night programming. The takeover was known as “Taylor-Made Monday.”
Davis said Taylor came with an “entourage” and while she was “charming and gracious and lovely,” the people she brought to set were “a little demanding.”
“For example, the dressing room she was in had to be painted lavender,” he continued. “The towels and the washcloths had to be lavender. There had to be two different kinds of water — water for her to drink and water for the dog to drink because her water made the dog’s mustache turn brown.”
Davis also said that, per Taylor’s contract, The Nanny cast and crew were “not to look at her eyes” and that the actress demanded a gift from Tiffany’s worth no less than $5,000.
“But this is the entourage making these demands, not Ms. Taylor at all,” he explained, adding “and then, she never saw the present.”
Davis recalled asking Taylor if he could take a photo with her. She agreed, but said it would cost him $150 for a hard copy.
“I said, ‘Why?’ and [the photographer] said, ‘Because according [to] her direction, it had to be retouched so she looks like a billion dollars,” Davis explained. The 80-year-old still has the photo hanging on his wall.
The Nanny, which followed Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), a cosmetics saleswoman from Queens who is accidentally hired as a nanny for the wealthy Sheffield family, aired on CBS from 1993 to 1999. Davis played Niles, the Sheffields’ trusted butler, for the entirety of the show’s run.
