ROCHESTER, N.Y. — John Bonnici is the new bishop of Rochester’s Catholic community. The Rochester area is also celebrating Reverend Thomas Mull after five decades of service.
New bishop of Rochester Catholic Diocese, John Bonnici, begins tenure with installation mass
His tenure began with a special installation mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Bonnici then attended a meet and greet at the Aquinas Institute on Dewey Avenue in Rochester.
Bonnici is the tenth bishop of the Rochester Catholic Diocese. Pope Leo XIV appointed him after accepting Bishop Salvatore Matano’s resignation.
Bonnici is from New York City and the son of immigrant parents. He spoke about his calling to ministry.
Rev. Thomas Mull honored for 50 years of dedication to Rochester’s Catholic community
Father Thomas Mull has spent 50 years serving the Diocese of Rochester, leading parishes across the Rochester and Finger Lakes region.
Known for his work in liturgy, education, healthcare ethics and community service, Father Mull has been pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Geneva since 2013. Father Mull served as pastor of Saint Mary’s Church in Canandaigua from 2000 until 2013 before moving on to lead Saint Benedict Parish, covering Canandaigua and Bloomfield.
“The ministry itself is something that God was calling me to. I actually went to seminary to try it out, to speak. The longer I was there the happier I was and the more confident I was, so I just sort of followed the process along,” he said.
“I went to Fisher, I went to St. Bernards, had a great experience with the communities that were there and so it kind of moved me right in to the church,” he added.
He is also the longtime celebrant of the televised Sunday Mass on MeTV and WHEC.com.
