Authorities in Barcelona found a wallet on Thursday belonging to Jimmy Gracey, a junior majoring in accounting at The University of Alabama who was reported missing in Spain on Tuesday. The police now suspect foul play in the case.
Gracey was in Barcelona during a personal trip to visit friends studying abroad. He reportedly got separated from a friend at the Shôko nightclub in Port Olímpic, Barcelona, and exited the club with an unidentified person at 3:00 a.m on Tuesday, according to a police analysis of surveillance footage. Gracey’s phone was later found stolen in an unrelated arrest of another person, although the police have declined to provide information from the phone, citing Spanish privacy laws.
Gisela Macedo, a reporter from the Barcelona-based media outlet El Periodico, told CBS affiliate WIAT that the Catalonian police “don’t believe this is a typical case of someone going out, partying and not returning for a couple days” due to suspicious circumstances around the disappearance.
Thursday, ABC 7 reported that police in Barcelona were undergoing a search of the ocean by the nightclub by boat and drone. During the search, authorities discovered a wallet belonging to Gracey floating in water by the beach Somorrostro.
Authorities said they are also searching the neighborhood around the nightclub and the apartment where Gracey stayed. Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalonian police agency, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Theta Chi, Gracey’s fraternity, issued a statement on its Instagram from CEO Michael Mayer, expressing the fraternity’s concern for its missing brother.
“Since learning of his disappearance, the International Fraternity has been in regular communication with federal lawmakers, the University of Alabama, and our chapter members, including those who remain in Barcelona searching tirelessly for Jimmy,” Mayer said.
Mayer said that the fraternity extends its full support to Gracey’s family and encouraged anyone with knowledge of his disappearance to contact the U.S. Consulate General Barcelona.
Gracey’s family also released a statement, calling on “anyone who may have seen Jimmy or has any information—no matter how small—to please contact 224.505.3886.”
“We are working closely with local authorities and are incredibly grateful for the support we have received,” the family said in the statement. “We ask that you keep Jimmy in your thoughts as we continue to do everything we can to bring him home safely.”
