An 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student was shot and killed overnight while walking with friends near Tobey Prinz Beach not far from campus, the school said, with Loyola officials calling the incident a “tragic loss” as police work to investigate.
“It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today in an incident north of the Lake Shore Campus,” a letter, released Thursday and addressed to the Loyola Community from school president Mark C. Reed, said. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her.”
About 2:11 a.m., an 18-year-old woman later identified as Gorman was walking outside near the beach with a group of friends when an unknown man approached them, police said. The man pulled out a gun and opened fire in the group’s direction.
Gorman was struck in the head with a gunshot, police said, and was pronounced dead on the scene. No other injuries were reported.
In a campus safety alert sent early Thursday morning, the school said the man, who was not known to the group, was wearing a face covering.
“We are in close contact with law enforcement as they investigate and work to understand the full circumstances of this tragedy,” Reed’s letter said. “Based on the information available to us now, there is no ongoing threat to our campus community. We will continue to provide updates as confirmed information becomes available.”
Photos from the scene overnight showed multiple police officers the school and CPD investigating the area near the beach.
