For a generation of England fans, Jos Buttler has been the gold standard in white-ball cricket. Not many people have been able to combine power, consistency, and innovation the way he has, whether it was in ODIs or changing the pace at the top in T20s. There is a strong argument to place him among England’s greatest-ever white-ball batters. Which is why what unfolded at the T20 World Cup 2026 felt so jarring.
Buttler never really got going. Eight innings, just 87 runs, and not a single 30+ knock in a campaign where England still managed to reach the semi-finals. Playing in India, Buttler was supposed to walk the talk for England but his failures just didn’t stop and fans thought it was over. It was unusual for a player of his level to have a bad tournament on the biggest stage. After India knocked England out in the second semi-final in Mumbai, many of the fans thought it is over for Buttler.
“I hope so”: Buttler shuts down retirement talk
Buttler himself isn’t ready to draw that line yet. Speaking after the tournament on the ‘For the Love of Cricket’ podcast, he admitted the disappointment but made it clear that retirement is not on his mind.
“I hope so,” Buttler said when asked if he would feature in England’s next white-ball assignment. “I don’t know. Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing, but I’ve been playing some of the best cricket of my (career) in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best.”
There is honesty in that admission. He knows the numbers weren’t good enough, especially in a format where he has set such high standards. At the same time, he is not looking at one bad tournament as a full stop. “I certainly have ambitions (to keep playing for England) but no longer being a captain, I’m not a selector and whatever, so what will be will be. Yeah, we will see.“
After the World Cup, he deliberately stepped away from the game. A week in the mountains with his family in France, far removed from cricket, was his way of resetting. “I couldn’t have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect. It’s exactly what I needed.“
That break might just prove crucial. Because the next phase is already around the corner. Buttler will return to India for IPL 2026, where he will turn out for Gujarat Titans (GT) under Shubman Gill. It offers him a stage, and perhaps a timely one, to rediscover rhythm before England’s home summer.
“Obviously the tournament didn’t go personally how I’d have liked it to go, and I just felt like I needed some space from cricket and not to think about the game, and I could not have been further away from cricket where I was in that week.“
“It was really refreshing – I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release. And slowly but surely, I’d say at the start of this week, (I am) just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what’s important to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn’t go quite as I would’ve liked.“
