A man is being questioned as a person of interest in connection to the Rogers Park fire that led to the death of a 32-year-old firefighter earlier this week.
Sources say the man was taken into custody at a local hospital Wednesday morning on an outstanding warrant for a crime unrelated to the fire, sources told NBC Chicago.
An internal Chicago Police Department bulletin dated March 17, 2026, that was obtained by NBC Chicago stated police were looking for the man to question him in relation to the fire that occurred around noon on Monday on North Shore Avenue near North Ravenswood Avenue.
NBC Chicago is not naming the man as he is not facing any charges related to the fire as of the publication of this article.
Public records show a warrant for his arrest was issued on January 16 after he failed to appear in court for an arrest for possession of methamphetamines, drug paraphernalia and retail theft. In addition to that arrest, records show he was arrested at least two other times since July 2025 for similar crimes.
It was not immediately known if he would be charged in relation to the fire.
Chicago Fire Department announced plans earlier in the day Wednesday for a memorial service for Michael Altman, the firefighter who was killed when he fell through a burning floor while battling the blaze.
He was rescued from the basement that was engulfed in flames and rushed to a local hospital where he later died, authorities said.
Altman leaves behind a young child and his wife, with whom he was expecting a second child.
“He comes from a family with a long history of public service in the Chicago Fire Department. He was the fourth generation to serve this great department,” Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said.
