Nanos has been leading the investigation since Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, went missing on Feb. 1.
As the search enters its seventh week, Daniel Butierez, a Republican congressional candidate in Arizona, is among those gathering signatures in an effort to remove Nanos, an elected Democrat, from office, according to NewsNation.
"It’s a shame that crime has risen to this point in our community, and I can’t blame just Nanos. We have failed leadership in Pima County,” he said.
Tuscon outlet 13 News confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that the recall effort was launched on Thursday, Mar. 12.
Butierez and other recall supporters have 120 days to collect 120,000 signatures to trigger the actual recall. The number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot is 25% of the number of votes cast in the last election for that office.
If the Nanos wins, he will remain in office and no other recall can occur during that term unless the proponents pay the cost of the prior recall election.
The recall effort comes just days after Nanos addressed discrepancies in his resume, and a $1.35 million lawsuit was filed against him and his department by an inmate.
