The Maga revolt against Trump has begun ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

The Maga coalition has no shortage of defining traits. It is coarse, it is brutal, it is willing to demonise women, immigrants and almost anyone who doesn’t back Donald Trump. It loves America, or at least the parts of it that fit the “vision”.

But above anything else, Maga has been defined by its loyalty. Donald Trump’s base has been willing to forgive anything he does or says, and to prioritise him over virtually any other value – even, in the case of January 6, the Constitution. For a time, it has seemed like nothing could tear this new coalition apart.

Increasingly, though, cracks are showing. Some in the movement were unwilling to tolerate the administration’s handling of Jeffrey Epstein. Now, the war with Iran seems to be a source of even greater dissent – and it’s starting to show in the administration itself.

Trump’s head of counterterrorism, Joe Kent, abruptly resigned on Tuesday in protest at the conflict. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation,” he wrote in a public resignation statement. “Until June of 2025, you understood that the wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation.”

As Kent noted, Trump spent years running against the “forever wars” of previous administrations, tapping into longstanding frustration across the US political spectrum at conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those lasted for decades, cost of thousands of US lives, billions of dollars, and wreaked a far greater human toll in the countries themselves (though Maga never necessarily cared about that).

Maga didn’t mind an airstrike here or there, or even an occasional special forces operation that didn’t come with a US death toll. A full-scale war in the Middle East is different. Kent is speaking to a deep “America First” movement within Maga that could still break from Trump over his foreign adventures.

Kent speaks to another deep fissure within Maga, too, over Republican support for Israel. In his resignation letter, Kent blamed Israel for Trump’s new conflict with Iran, a contentious but plausible claim. Bizarrely, though, he also laid the blame for George W Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq at Israel’s door – a claim bordering on the conspiratorial, which speaks to a growing schism on both Israel and antisemitism across Maga’s coalition.

No one had heard of Joe Kent before Tuesday, and he is unlikely to be remembered for long afterwards. But his resignation could be a defining moment for Maga, and even mark the beginning of its end. What comes next, though, could be even darker still.
