We’ve talked a lot about how many players the Blackhawks have drafted in recent years (I detailed how many have now signed) and the reality that, even if you’re a top-line player for a junior/college/international team, there are only three spots on the top line and only six in the top six. And some of those are already spoken for in Chicago.
Yesterday I wrote about how the Blackhawks’ coaching staff is still working on developing an all-around game with Nick Lardis. At this immediate moment, they want to see a more complete game from him before they hand him the keys to a more prominent role. That’s a good thing.
We should want to see this approach from the Blackhawks’ coaches, because more prospects are going to arrive with impressive resumes and lofty expectations from fans. Win at the role you have now, and earn a more prominent one. And, maybe, the coaches find that there is a perfect role for a player to own and they don’t have to worry about it for the next… 1-5 years.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) March 16, 2026 Speaking of earned opportunities, at practice on Monday we saw a change on the blue line. Artyom Levshunov was up skating with Alex Vlasic, Wyatt Kaiser was back and skating with Sam Rinzel and Louis Crevier was on the third pair with Ethan Del Mastro. Blashill said he thought Levshunov played one of his better games of the season in Vegas and they wanted to see him get some additional run. I asked Blashill how he thought Levshunov was handling his increased time on the penalty kill. Here’s his answer:“He’s getting there. I think you need reps and he’s still learning how to gap in the neutral zone and kind of hold the blue line a little bit better. His reads instinctively are good, so when he gets put in chaos, which you do at times in defensive situations specifically, the penalty kill, he makes a lot of little defensive plays like he did the other day when he went long body. We got outnumbered at the net. So he’s able to kind of do that. He’s still probably learning some of the reads so that they’re more natural, so it’s going to take reps.”
No, Sacha Boisvert won’t play tonight. After signing his entry-level contract and flying into Chicago on Monday, he’s still clearing the immigration paperwork. He can’t even practice with the Blackhawks until that’s finished. He does have a number, though, and a stall between Frank Nazar and Connor Bedard at the Blackhawks’ practice rink. It sounds like Boisvert is going to have to earn his minutes in the NHL just like everyone else. Here’s how Blashill said the Blackhawks will integrate Boisvert into the lineup:“We’ll see. I’ve never been on the ice with him,” Blashill said. “I don’t know if we’ll play him at center or wing. But I would say slowly and not necessarily… we’ll take it game by game and see where he fits exactly. It’s also important that guys understand they’re going to get some opportunity, but you have to know that you have to earn it. It’s a little bit misleading to bring him in here, play him every game, play him on the first line and be like, oh that’s the way it is. a lot of times you have to earn it, so we’ll see.”

— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) March 16, 2026 Here’s what Blashill said about what he initially sees Boisvert adding to the Blackhawks’ current mix:“You’ll have a clean slate in terms of your game … then I’ll watch and see. If I was to sit here based on what I’ve seen, he could be a guy who will need to have a physical impact on the game on a night-to-night basis. If he can do that, he becomes a real commodity because then he has a physical impact with some ability to make a play, with the ability to hold onto the puck, those types of things. He can add something to our team I don’t know we have enough of, and that’s that kind of hard skill. If he can do that, it’ll be a real positive for us.”
I thought this was an insightful breakdown of Boisvert from Sam Robb O’Hagan at the Boston Hockey Blog. Here’s part of what he wrote about the newly-signed Blackhawks forward:I’d love to tell you the kind of player the Blackhawks are getting, but Boisvert was so quiet during his lone season at BU that it’s hard to even know who he is at his best. The Terriers, inarguably, didn’t get the version of Boisvert that made him perhaps the most sought-after player in the transfer portal ahead of the 2025-26 season. Chicago is betting that it will.
To that end, the Hawks aren’t drawing dead. Boisvert — who scored 36 goals as an assistant captain at Muskegon in his final year in the USHL — was a first-round pick for a reason. He led North Dakota in goals and points in 2024-25, winning NCHC Rookie of the Year, and he didn’t do that by accident, either.
But, to be frank, few parts of Boisvert’s game stood out during his time on Comm Ave. He scored just three goals, and his shot constantly missed the net on medium- and high-danger looks. He didn’t transition through the neutral zone well, either with his puck-carrying or his playmaking, and he wasn’t notable in the defensive zone. He recorded a gorgeous assist in the season finale at UMass Lowell and nearly recorded another in the Hockey East Quarterfinal at UConn, and those were about the only memorable plays he made. …
The bottom line? There’s evidence of Boisvert as one of the most exciting prospects in the sport, and there’s evidence of Boisvert as an underperforming star who didn’t get to play in a playoff game. I’ve got no clue which side of Boisvert is real. But it’ll surely be entertaining to find out.
The one remaining Blackhawks prospect in the Hockey East tournament was recognized for his three-point effort this weekend. I was disappointed Václav Nestrašil didn’t make the conference’s all-rookie team, but I’ll take an individual honor in the conference’s postseason as a nice tip of the cap.Thrilled to see @vaclavnestrasil recognized after playing a big role with three points in our quarterfinal win over Northeastern : t.co/iE8fDw9DTT#NewMass X #Flagship pic.twitter.com/4Pcrv7GQDM

No, we didn’t get a firm yes or no on Russia’s participation. Yes, we know it’s going to be good hockey and there should be more involved Blackhawks than there were in this year’s Winter Olympics.
