While the star of the show will be the green dye in the Chicago River, there are plenty of other St. Patrick’s Day events for residents and visitors to enjoy.

St. Patrick’s Day will fall on Tuesday this year, but the big parties will get underway over the weekend.

Saturday, March 14

Chicago River dyeing

Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations kick off with the beloved dyeing of the Chicago River.

Anyone want to see the colors transform will likely need to head out the door early.

While the river dye typically gets underway away at around 10 a.m., the dyeing process typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and the amount of time can depend on conditions.

Here’s how it works:

Members of the Chicago Plumbers Union in boats use a concoction that sprays dye out of plumping pipes and spout pumps.

The mysterious mixture actually comes out orange, but the color changes to green once the dye sets in.

Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The city’s popular St. Patrick’s Parade also steps off on March 14.

Bagpipers, dancers, green floats and more will head down Columbus Drive as spectators take in the sights.

Shamrock’n at Old St. Patrick’s Church

Billed as the West Loop’s ultimate St. Patrick’s Day destination, Shamrock’n features live entertainment and dancing, beverages and pub fare – plus activities for all ages.

The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.

Eventgoers are asked to enter on Des Plaines Street between Adams & Jackson.

Sunday, March 15

South Side Irish Parade

The South Side Irish Parade, the largest-community based St. Patrick’s Day Parade outside of Dublin, Ireland, takes place on Sunday, March 15.

It gets underway at noon from West 103rd Street and Western Avenue in Chicago’s Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood. 

Northwest Side Irish Parade

Festivities won’t be isolated to Chicago’s South Side.

The Northwest Side Irish Parade, billed as a celebration of faith, family and heritage, also begins at noon on Sunday, March 15.

Tuesday, March 17

St. Patrick’s Day

Though many events take place in the days leading up to it. Patrick’s Day falls on Tuesday, March 17, this year.

Gaelic Park, the Irish cultural event venue in south suburban Oak Forest, opens for the day beginning with lunch, and has several musical performances planned.
