Man found dead in Aroma Park tornado wreckage was 65-year-old army veteran ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The man found dead Thursday in the wreckage left behind days after an EF-3 tornado struck Kankakee County was identified by authorities Friday morning.

Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said 65-year-old Maurice R. Norington was found dead around 4:30 p.m. in his residence on Oakwood Drive in Aroma Park, one of the areas hardest hit by the powerful twister.

Norington’s cousin, Charisse Daniels, said he was a “very proud army veteran” who was “well loved by his entire family and he loved us all.”

Raised in the Kankakee and Momence area, Norington loved living in his newly built home, Daniels said.

“He will be missed dearly,” Daniels said.

Authorities said preliminary indications suggest he sustained fatal injuries during the storm and was initially discovered by employees of a service company who were working in the area.

A neighbor told NBC Chicago they thought Norington was not home but saw that a tree was thrown onto his house by the storm and they’re devastated now knowing he was killed.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out the family, friends and neighbors of Mr. Norington,” Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement, later reminding residents in the areas impacted by the storms to “continue checking on loved ones and neighbors until everyone has been accounted for.”

Norington is the third person authorities have identified as victims of Tuesday’s severe storms.

A couple identified as Ed and Arleen Kozlowski were found dead inside their home in Lake Village, Indiana that was “destroyed” by a “large tornado” that hit the area, authorities said on Wednesday.

The couple’s family told NBC News the pair were married for more than 60 years and described them as “really awesome humans” who led a good life and died together.

The tornado that struck Kankakee County was of EF-3 intensity, the National Weather Service reported, with peak winds around 150 miles per hour reported along Sandbar Road northeast of Aroma Park, NWS said.

It was estimated to have been at least 1,000 yards wide, or more than 3,000 feet. After it touched down in the southern portion of Kankakee, the tornado moved through more than 36 communities, including Lake Village, Indiana, according to NWS.
